The Benny (Macho)

This was available to download on Live so I figured I'd give it a look. For those who don't remember, it's the Halo 'portal' thing that will have videos (the new Halo anime premieres there this Saturday) and the latest Halo news, as well as tracking your Halo career across all the Halo games.

There's a short walkthrough here that explains it all, but essentially all your achievements from Halo 3, ODST and Wars are collected into a Halo gamerscore, which then gives you several meaningless awards: "milestones" for Halo achievements (similar to trophy levels on PS3) and "Waypoint awards" for earning specific collections of achievements (the Explorer award for finding skulls, terminals etc., the Vehicle Specialist for vehicle achievements, and so on).

The only actual remotely tangible rewards are some avatar unlocks, which you can see here, which include a full ODST outfit and a neat but pointless toy Monitor that flies around your avatar.

So at the moment there isn't really much to it, it's just taking gamerscore from three games and putting them in a special place to compare against others for a specific subset of achievement bragging rights, offering a few virtual awards for them. There's potential there, and I imagine it will be an interesting place around Reach, but that's a way off yet. Oh, and as you should be able to see from my gamertag below, it inserts a logo into your list of games, despite not having any displayable achievements.

Did you catch the Legends anime thing on it last Saturday? It was a blatant attempt to make Halo appeal more to Japanese audiences, but it wasn't bad for what it was. I'm not quite sure where it fits though, continuity-wise.

lol anime is stupid I don't watch that stuff. Im most excited about being able to catch all the Red vs Blue episodes on my HDTV

If anybody is interested in the Halo anime it's currently up on YouTube here. I imagine they will get pulled quickly, but I downloaded them for my nephew (who didn't get to see it on Saturday) so it's all good.

The next episode of Halo: Legends is up, The Duel, and will be on Waypoint for the rest of the day. They're not even trying to hide the attempts to appeal to Japan in this one. There's an elite in full samurai armour, the Arbiter wears Japanese robes at his temple home and marries what looks like a Na'vi from Avatar (is that what female elites look like?), the hunters are five times bigger than usual (seriously, they're huge, maybe the height of a Scarab leg) and the Arbiter is basically a crazy swordsman, dual-wielding the elite swords and fighting off armies. It's almost like they're just getting these people to make a regular anime and then re-skinning it into Halo. They're not bad though, for fifteen minutes of Halo fluff.
