This is mainly in relation to hawx but I think GRiD is the same.
On the network there is dlc to purchase which contains new planes (cars in the latter). I was just wondering if anyone knows if this dlc just allows early access to contect which will unlock anyway through gameplay, or if the only way to get these vehicles is to purchase the dlc. I don't want to pay and then discover I could have unlocked them just by playing the game. We aren't talking cheap here either.

My guess would be is that if its download content its actually adding to the game.

This kinda DLC really pisss me off I'm basically paying for a bloody cheat.
I don't think Hawx has got that kind of DLC though but its been mostly from EA

I couldn't find anything definite, but this Joystiq post includes discussion in the comment threads about the planes, some of which seem to unlock through registering on a Ubisoft site, and others are unlockable through secret codes.
This EG post had a couple of similar comments, as did this one. I'm not sure they're much more than cosmetic differences anyway. |

yeh, theres codes for unique planes when you marry your UBI account with Hawx.
BUT.. I do believe the extra PSN content only allows you to have early access to the planes. I thought they were planes you could only get from DLC, but if you go to the hanger and press L2 (i think) it will show you the planes you are getting eventually. I believe all the planes from the three downloads are there, just that you get them now if you buy the DLC rather than from level 30-40 or what ever it is. I was surprised too, surely this is an EA trick. But EA seems to of sorted itself out a little, and others seem to be following in their shadow. |

It seems particularly prevalent in the plane games. Ace Combat seemed to have loads of updates just for new (pricey) planes.

Thanks guys. I've already used the codes and synced my account so it could be I've got most of those already and not realised it. Cheeky git developers if you ask me.

I'm pretty sure if you go to the PSN Store where the specific game add-on or DLC content is, you should find in the text that identifies what you get includes if the Purchaseable item can be unlocked normally by progressing through the game or not. I think that is a consumer protection law. I know for sure that it says that in the "content of the Add-ons" for Need For Speed. They should tell you whether or not the items you are purchasing can or cannot be unlocked through normal game progress. ![]()
