Thanks for taking the time to support the thread everyone. I seem to learn a little something every time I check in. And that is the whole point of this, no?

Just in case anyone wasn't aware. Blu-ray discs have a protective layer, meaning they are damaged less easily. There are some videos on youtube of a guy trying to destroy his disc. Quite impressive.

I never knew that! I've moved my PS3 a couple times and basically just reset the video settings before I moved it. I always thought it was dumb that Sony didn't think of that - but apparently they did! Thanks for the info!

Here's another tip, if you weren't quite thinking straight and all you did was flip the switch on the back to "On" and then went and sat down with your controller and didn't bother to press the touch key to fire up the machine, the PS button on your controller will do the trick

Great thread Opsdaddy, &
"thanks" also go out to every one to added all their own tips too .

Wish I had saw this 2 days ago, cause I finally got a PS 3,(mint condition chromed 60 gigger) but it had no manual, so I've been pulling my hair out doing a bunch of "trial & error bullsh*t.
Anyways, although I finally figured out what I should've been doing, 2 of the 3 problems I was having were already answered above in this thread.

My 3 problems were(so far, knock on wood)....

1. For 2 days I couldn't figure out how to get it to turn off using the front sensor,(so I kept turning it off in the back)

2. Couldn't figure out how to get the game to eject(figured it out yesterday, that the little shiny silver arrow is actually another heat-sensor switch too).

3. Controller worked, then stopped altogether(I kept fiddling with it, plugging it in, then unplugging it, till I accidently touched that little PS button in the middle, and Viola...it worked again).

My own tip: get a manual........cause I'll tell ya, it's a real bitch being a non-tech savy, test-dummy without a manual(like me)!

BTW, if anyone cares, you can check out my own wayward adventure on "what not to do if you get used manual-less PS3" in my thread called,
"The hidden cost of asking a free question"

Default friends who sign on and off the PSN

Hopefully someone can answer this one:

I think I have about 12 people on my friends list now and it's getting quite annoying when I play a game and every two minutes it tells me that so and so has either signed on or off the PSN. Is there a way to turn that off??

thanks

there should be an option somewhere that says disable alerts. Look for it.

In a pinch your PS2 cable will work just fine for your PS3.

Default Getting the most out of it.

Just in case some people didn't know...

For those of you that have 1000's of songs/photos. etc on your PC or laptop, you can set up a network so that your PS3 will recognize your PC and be able to access the files off of it.

I've got mine set up now so that they go to the router, then access the other computers in the house (they have to be turned on) It's pretty great, I can flip through all the songs on my computer without taking up space on the PS3 hardrive. Or you could just get an external hard drive and plug that into the front of you PS3..it works as well.

"You can connect and share files with your PC via a wifi connection. Follow these directions to do so.
1. Make sure PS3 is connected to your network
2. Install Windows Media Player 11 on your computer(s) that is attached to the same network
3. In WMP11 go to Tools>Options
4. In the options dialog box click the library tab, then click Configure Sharing
5. You should see all the computers on your network AND an “unknown device” (which is your PS3)
6. Right click on “unknown device” and select Allow
Now if you go back to your PS3 you should see a Windows-looking icon at the top of Pictures, Music and Video sections. Use that icon to access your content library. (This assumes that you set up WMP11 so all your media is in its library) I can access any video, music or picture (as long as the PS3 can read the format) from my computer on the other end of the house, I love it!"

I found this quick & easy "How To" video guide to up the PS3's harddrive

(FYI, Please note that this guy says to only use a 5400 RPM speed HD, but I've also been reading where other folks have put in a 7200 RPM. Some of the 7200 RPM brands work right & other's won't, so you'll have to do the research on that).
