Default Ratchet And Clank question

I have never played any of the games in the series, my girlfriend says its really good, and it only gets good reviews, but onto my question, is there a story I need to know before playing Tools of Destruction?
or is Tools of Destruction a separate story from the PS2 versions?
either way, its either ToD or Uncharted for my next game.

PS. Me and my girlfriend love Jak & Daxter, she says Ratchet And Clank is a lot like it so I guess ill like it.

I've not played ToD but generally I'd say an awareness of the previous Ratchet games adds to the experience, seeing familiar characters and all, but it isn't essential. From what I remember of the previous games the story always pretty much wraps up by the end of it and the next one quickly introduces a brand new scenario. They're more self-contained than the Jak games, at least.

If you were comfortable with the increasing focus on guns (and racing) in the Jak games then you should enjoy the Ratchet games as they're quite gun-heavy for platformers.

Yeah, I agree. While it may be a little helpful to have played previous installments, it certainly isn't necessary. Each Ratchet game is an entirely new adventure, and I'm sure you'll have a blast with Tools of Destruction regardless of whether or not you played the Ratchets on the PS2.

Speaking as someone who just got into ratchet and clank last year or so, even now they're still very playable. The first one didn't feel dated to me really, though the new one is seriously one of the best looking games I think I've ever seen artistically and technically.
