AV Receiver says Multi-Channel IN

When playing back dvd's and blue ray- my av receiver always says multi-channel in. It doesn't register Dolby Digital or DTS. I was wondering why. Every other source I have used works correctly, whether it was DVD player or my XBOX or XBOX HD DVD.
Actually it is that way on every audio output from the PS3.

I am using the HDMI output from the PS3 going into a Denon receiver with HDMI 1.1

I have a similiar case of that with my AV receiver, except I have HDMI to the TV, Optical to the receiver. I also notice that in the XMB menus, the sound doesn't register as being on. It's almost as if the PS3 disables the audio output until there's consistant sound going through. So those clicks you hear switching from icon to icon in the XMBm unless I'm going through them fast, nothing comes out.

Secondly, the blue light on my Sony receiver that SHOULD go on when a DD or DTS sound is being received, does not go on. Still outputs as 5.1 though. do notice thought that the receiver mentions 'PCM' audio being output in both the XMB and on DVDs, as opposed to when I play through my DVD player, it says "Dolby Digital 5.1" or "DTS 5.1" etc. I've set the audio settings to output 5.1 and DTS, and I do get the 5.1 sound, but the receiver isn't quite picking it up normally.

That's the problem!!! Same as mine, I have been through the settings several time and changed them to no avail. I still don't get it, though like you said, it's still 5.1.

You know, something just came to mind, and it's a random thought, although probably not the case and I'll say way...

My thought was it could be because the PS3 might be doing the DD/DTS audio processing. As it turns out after reading the booklet, it seems the processor is actually built in. In which case, you have to question the processor and the output.

I just played around with my DVD player and the PS3 both. DVD player outputs both correctly as long as both the decoders on the DVD player are enabled. Um, my receiver should be able to do this, but it wasn't doing it quite correctly. Also I noticed when I enabled D-PCM instead of the Dolby Digital on the DVD player, I got exactly what the PS3 has been doing to me.

Now, to the PS3. I put in the same movie. Strange as it is, it light up and said 'Dolby Digital 5.1 stream' or whatever. Um... Wow?! That was random. Switched over to DTS... Same thing! So I question myself for a second, "why is it suddenly working?" Well, earlier yesterday I was kinda getting annoyed with the in XMB clicky sound not working, and the PS3 seemingly halting audio output until I do something, where as if I output via HDMI to the TV, it doesn't do that. Odd. Anyways, I had been playing with the audio outputs, and while I know I've selected Dolby Digital and DTS before, I wonder if it wasn't accepting it. So give that a shot.

If you don't know what I'm talking about (although you likely do if you're into home theater!) go to...
SETTINGS -> SOUND SETTINGS -> AUDIO OUTPUT SETTINGS
Make sure you select Dolby Digital and DTS if you haven't already. Save the settings, try a disc.

Now if it goes and selects some PCM stream, the receiver tosses Pro Logic decoding at me... LOL... Pro Logic.... Ewww! Understandable though since my receiver was the generation right before 7.1 DD/DTS receivers were on the market. Fortunately, it knows exactly what Dolby Digital and DTS are, and the light is coming on, and not getting the 'PCM' stream anymore.

As for the problem with the tone, I think I just realized the problem is the receiver, not the PS3. When there's no input coming in, it cuts the signal to the speakers. Suppose to save power or prevent noise, I don't know.

Anyway, give the settings a whirl if you haven't tried that since, and see what happens.
