How often do system updates get released for PS3?

I think it's safe to say there's really no particular set time between firmware updates. Usually if something serious breaks they might scramble to fix it. The last firmware update I saw was right around xmas time. Prior to that I was seeing firmware updates often. Basically I think they feel at this point, don't fix what's not broken.

Yeah, there's no set schedule or anything. When an update arrives, it arrives. Sony has said they plan to issue fewer firmware updates in the future for the PS3, though, and I think we're already starting to see that. I remember downloading updates at least once every month during the early days of having the system, but they're much more infrequent now.

Thank you! I had heard that there was a firmware update every month, too. I last updated it on Christmas, so I was wondering what was going on with January. Another question: If there's a firmware update, will it appear in the Information Board?

Nope, not that I've ever seen. Basically you'll be forced to update when you try to go onto the PLAYSTATION NETWORK. If you're part of the Sony Playstation Underground, Sony sends out notices via email usually within a day or two after it's released. Also psxetreme.com reports on it, so chances of missing it... very unlikely if you have a ps3!

I have on occassion missed an update when I have connected to the internet AFTER booting up my machine so it doesn't hurt to go to the system menu every now and then to run the system update function.
