Full story.
http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/2504.html This is puzzling. Call me stupid but I believe that a bigger HD is a great idea, especially now that the the only other option available will soon be the frankly tiny 40gb console. Add to that the rumour that the new beastly machine will have real bc, not emu and in my mind I think Sony are on to a winner. They can stick whatever price tag they like on that baby and it will sell. It's alright saying that you can buy a cheap external HD for additional storage but that doesn't solve the problem of demos and PS1 games. I have already had to delete a couple of demos I might have gone back to, simply because I didn't have space for new stuff. In an ideal world I would like to see Sony provide a system update which permitted you to quickly zip ANY file on your HD and move it to an external drive so you could keep your PS1 dl collection on your Seagate and then just quickly transfer it to yourt PS3 when you wanted to play Wipeout/Medieval or whatever the game happened to be. That's just one example of how useful this function would be. If copyright then becomes an issue they could have it so that once downloaded, the files can only be used on the machine they were installed on.

As you know gabe people did a lot of complaining over the price of the 60Gb on release dispite what they would get for thier money, I would think Sony will watch how it performs in the U.S before doing what might be a waste of time and money and release it over here.

they will release something over here i reckon.
probably because the PSTV will demand a bigger HDD. seeing as you can only put music, pics and video on to an EXT HD, if you have all these games and TV shows going to your normal internal HDD, it will fill up in record time. people will be screaming for blood... so i reckon this time next year we will see a bigger drive coming out. does anyone know how to replace an existing internal HDD?

Not sure that just anyone will buy one here in the U.S., Gabe, but its all speculation anyway. 2008 may be the year for ps3, but it will be the games that make it so, not another system, even higher priced at that...

Agreed, a 120bg PS3 is silly at this point here in the US. People complain about the price of the PS3 more than anything (which is silly because it's actually cheaper than an xbox360 which most people I know who complain about the price own an xbox360...)
The 40gb is doing well, and while foolish articles make claims that the PS3 makes people with a PS2 game collection retire it, that's false. I still have my PS2 connected as well as my PS3, XBOX, XBOX 360, etc. Backward compatibility is a convenience, not a matter of retiring something. Back in the day, people didn't throw out their NES system because the SNES came out. People who want to keep playing PS2 games will keep their PS2 connected, they're not forced to put it away to buy a PS3. So the cheaper cost of the PS3 without the backwards compatibility is a good thing. Personally... I own the 80gb PS3. I was one of those consumers that didn't know the difference between the 60gb and 80gb other than what was stated on the box. Would I have changed my mind if I knew the 60gb was more compatible? Not likely. The larger HD and included game sold me on the 80gb, same reason I have an xbox360 elite. Not everyone cares about that stuff though, and until the games come out and bring Sony to the front of competition, any other versions of the PS3 would just be money thrown away. One thing Sony could do is start including an HDMI cable and a headset much like the XBOX does. The cable would make people feel better about the costs I'm sure (especially on the retail level where such a cable is overpriced) and the headset would go to show that players can chat while they play. I wasn't even aware of such a function on the PS3 until I was talking to a friend about UT3. Features need to be utilized and expressed, the games will do the rest. |

I very much doubt a 120GB version of the PS3 will cost more. HDs are cheap.
I'll be pretty frustrated if they implement more features with this "rumored" new SKU, however. I purchased my PS3 based on the knowledge that it was the best available tier with the most features and the largest HD. I don't want to go through the hassle of upgrading my system because Sony can't decided what direction they want to go in. I'd have built a gaming PC if that were the case. |
