both IGN and Gamespy have both done peviews on this, and again it just makes 1-up look like kids ..again!

reviews should be out in the next few days... we'll see. im hoping its ok. they all say that Portal, Team F, HL2 run perfectly, HL2 Pt1 runs mostly well with very few problems, but its HL2 Pt2 that has the problems, but even saying that its not as bad as what 1-up have said its like.

but again, we'll see.. should be out monday after next in the states.. im hoping PSXE reviews it fast!

edit... just read Gamespots preview.. again they also say what gamespy and iGN have said.. pretty much to the letter.

This is a must read...

basically this guy form Kotaku has recieved the final retail version of Orange Box.

is it as bad as 1-up says? is it like what IGN, Gamespy and Gamespot have said... yes and no.

basically this is still very much worth the purchase, imo after reading this report.

Well worth reading both parts of his review, and going back for part 3... i believe there will be a third part, as its been very indepth so far!!

http://kotaku.com/gaming/playstation...one-327655.php

and part 2.. http://kotaku.com/gaming/playstation...two-328149.php

so.. did you read it?

you still going to buy it?

I know i am.

Ive been waiting three years to play this, mainly because Im crap with mouse and keys and I never have a PC that can run a game like that well enough, so if I want to play it that badly then I'll have to settle for what they give me, if it was anyother or most titles I would normaly not bother but the HL story has always intrigued the shit out of me

i have a feeling it wont be as bad as we think, i really mean that. i reckon it will be a lil like watching digi telly (guys in the UK unite) because its rubbish isnt it, it stutters and flips out, but it doesnt ruin anything (much, lol).

i think that we all think that it will be the pits, and that might not be a bad thing, because if its not so bad then we should have a very good time with it indeed.. im going to search for this guys third part, see what his conclusion is.

yeah it sounds playable and should still be fun but......I find it sad that such a good game hasn't had better treatment, it could have been a slightly improved version being that (and Ive mentioned this before) its on two consoles that are more capable than the PC it was created for 3 years ago, I think its a damm shame.

Well I guess as long as Portal is fine (played it on a cousin's 360) I think we're all good, lol

IGN has reviewed Orange Box, and gave it 8.4. not a bad score.. how did it fair?

http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/840/840505p1.html

Interesting review.. and im not doubting there’s problems, whether theyre as bad as IGN say, I cant say. As I have discounted IGN’s reviews so many times.. imo they were and still are wrong about Assassins Creed.

But they gave it a great score, I wouldn’t of thought after reading that review that it deserved that score, but im pleased that it did get it.

What I would like to clear up (and this is where my doubt for IGN’s competence comes in).. if the graphics are the same and I believe the menu system presentation is the same too, why does it receive a much much lower scores in those areas than the 360 version?

Is it because now the graphics are dated, like theyre comparing it to Cod4 etc etc… are the graphics as nice? They look good, but is that why theres a lesser score than when they first reviewed HL2 for the PC and 360? If they could review this for the pc and 360 again, I wonder how the scores would fair.. it’s a shame they haven’t mentioned this in their review, I think it’s a very important part of the job, seeing as youre reviewing a game that has already been reviewed. You are comparing it to the ‘other’ versions as well as everything else that has come out since.

Personally I think that people like IGN should put reviewers on to this game that have never played this game before on any format, that would give a fairer review.. and if they needed to compare it for people who have multiple console, have a secondary note at the end. But the review wasn’t a great one, but a good score.. bit weird.

Anyway, I will still be picking this up for sure. I know I can ‘help’ my framerate and that if the lag was terrible because they were playing on the euro servers.. thank god I live in the UK! Lol

reviews for this are...

IGN 8.4/10: http://uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/840/840505p1.html

Gamespy 3.5/5: http://uk.ps3.gamespy.com/playstatio.../840960p1.html

Gamespot 9/10: http://uk.gamespot.com/ps3/action/ha...e2/review.html

Gamedaily 8/10 http://www.gamedaily.com/games/half-...iew/6395/1908/

AU OPM 9/10

PS3zine 9.5/10 http://www.gamerzines.com/downloading-p3zine_10.html

after hearing people with the game talk about the frame rate problems that are pretty much the only real gripes about this game, seems that gamers who have OB dont think the glitches are that bad, infact they really seem puzzled why sites like IGN have banged on about these problems. no one is saying the OB is better than the 360 version, but what theyre seem to be saying is that the problems expressed are really not that bad.

if you read Gamespys review.. its a cracking review, they only mark it down for the framerate.

apparently the framerate issue could be something to do with the Autosave function. seems that it stutters when it kicks in. thats why most reviewers seems puzzled why it stutters when nothing is going on.

I dont know if you can turn this off in options, but its possible EA could patch that if its really the cause.

either way, if that lil trick that some of us here have done (turning off things working in the background of the PS3) that could go a long way to fix any stuttering.

I have those settings on my PS3 and i didnt have one single noticable framedrop in AC, unlike all the other people that said they were plagued with it.

anyway, its out here friday, i doubt we'll see a review here on the main page before then, far too busy playing UT3 ... yes im jealous! i wont be able to play til Xmas!

Eurogamer gave the PS3 version 8/10 in their review (compared to 10/10 for the PC and 360 versions), which comes with some screenshot comparisons. Aside from differences with graphical things like anti-aliasing, blurring and the like it pretty much goes like this:
  • Half Life 2 - Fine, similar to 360 version.
  • Episode One - Runs fine at the start, but "the deeper you move into the game, the more the frame rate issues intrude on the experience. Catching falling debris with the gravity gun becomes an exercise in anticipating lag as the frame rate dives dramatically. Fierce firefights can become a slideshow. Death is your constant companion not necessarily because of your lack of gaming ability but because you literally can't see what's going on".
  • Episode Two - "essentially a complete write-off".
  • Team Fortress 2 - A few issues, "but nothing you don't automatically compensate for and nothing that fundamentally affects the superbly executed concept.
  • Portal - "pretty much consistent cross-platform, but this is not necessarily such a good thing". Apparently it's not really a twitch-heavy precision game so it's still playable on both consoles.
Ultimately they conclude that the PC version beats all:

Quote:
Most of that score is attributable to the superb quality of the core Valve games rather than the shoddy conversion work which sees one game out of the five ruined, and another badly compromised. That being the case, if you own a PC, even a relatively lightweight one, that version will almost certainly be the better - and definitely cheaper - purchase.
But as it's a PC game at heart that's hardly surprising.
