I wanted to post more when I set the topic but my boss came in!

I know a couple of people who might for for the 40gb version but I want to know if they are changing the system more significantly than chopping the harddrive.

Apparently it's now super, ultra official: "40GB unit to sell for £299 with no PS2 backwards compatibility". 60GB PS3 dropping to £349.

wont it be backward compatible with a firmare update like what we have in the UK?

to be honest it will be a shame if not, because unlike the jump from PS1 to PS2.. the games on the PS1 imo wernt as playable after the leap to PS2.

With the PS2's leap to PS3.. thers a fair few games that are very very playable still.

at the moment im bloody enjoying Dark Cloud 2 again.... wouldnt be able to do that without B/C.

saying that though, if we just didnt have B/C... im not sure i would miss it that much. sure, I would moan.. but why buy a next Gen machine only to play old games on it? its a nice feature, but not a console seller.

As I understand it (it's a point that has been repeated again and again during various discussions) even the Euro PS3s have some element of PS2 hardware in it. Quote from a random comment in a UK discussion:

Which would suggest that the Euro PS3 had just enough PS2 hardware to make PS2 games playable. Obviously that was just based off a similar comment that lots of people have brought up, so there's still something of a [citation needed] before I could be sure of it.

I can't see there being many who would be bothered by the loss though. PS2s are plentiful and cheap.

In another interesting twist, the stock of 60GB PS3s won't be replenished, according to EuroGamer:

So once the 60GB stock runs out the 40GB version will be the only option, unless/until Europe gets the bumper 80GB version.

As quickly as they are changing the hardware options dont be surprised if another, even more afforable system is available sometime in 2008....
