Question Ps3 overheating!?

My PS3 is so freaking hot. Is this normal? I can barely feel any air being pushed around and dont hear fans running. I have an infrared temp sensor, it is 120 freaking degrees F on the right side of the console, and nearing 100 on the left side.

Er...so are we talking about your PS3 or PS2? Either way, that doesn't sound normal...I've heard nothing about PS3's overheating. They're extremely reliable (yes, I was surprised, too).

Damn! I don't think that is normal though one side of my PS3 does get very warm but that's because of it fanning out all the hot air. I'd drop an email to Sony tech or give them a call.

you can buy a fan that goes on the back, but even tho i have one.. i have not really used it since buying it... does work tho.

i think you can buy one from Amazon. its just a strip of three or four usb fans cased in plastic that snaps on to the back of your ps3...

They recently put the PS3 through a series of stress tests to examine its reliability, and they just couldn't kill that thing (they even put it in a sauna for 108 hours). So overheating isn't a popular problem... The system will run hot, but it should take a while to reach the point where it's actually hot to the touch.

If that's happening after only a few minutes of play, or something, you may have a problem. Perhaps you should just take advantage of that 1-year manufacturer's warranty and get yourself a new one.

Not to get off topic, but with all those xbox 360 dying cause of over heating and hd problems, I still haven't had an issue with mine. Most of the time it was due to heat and the paste on the cpu. The crazy thing is I haven't had one issue yet. It might be cause I left that sucker on Final Fantasy XI for 2 months straight (of course swapping out other games) but it was on 24/7 running, and never once a power down. My guess is that I cooked it enough so it won't overheat.

There's no worries in my mind cause I have a Best Buy 3 year no hassle, go to the store and get a new one if something goes wrong with it.

What kind of warranty you have on it shirt? Where is it placed, what room, close to any other electronics? Maybe in a av case or something.

it sits on a shelf by itself. theres room around it to breathe. It gets to that temp in 10-15 minutes of use. I emailed Sony, they responded and said to call them. so thats where im at now.

First of all, the problems with the 360s don't have anything to do with how people take care of them, nor is it an overheating problem. They were all made with the potential for a colossal system failure to happen; that can occur regardless of how well you keep your system. The "three red rings of death" isn't avoidable in any way, unfortunately. If you get lucky, you get lucky.

As for the PS3, all of them have 1-year manufacturer warranties. And considering it hasn't been a year since the launch, his is still covered. Sony has to replace it if it's overheating (and it seems to be doing that).

It hit a new high temp after 30 minutes of DVD playback. 127 degrees.
