Default Heavenly Sword

I got my copy yesterday, and Im glad it had a good review from this site, because it was slated on IGN which nearly put me off getting it but it was totally unjust.

Agree with everything in Ben's review.
Extremely fun to play and I just cant get over the detail in Nariko's face.
It is truly unbelieavble.

Voice acting is SUPERB as said but was just wondering in the cut scene after the 1st battle was the lip syncing out for anyone else when Nariko was talking?
Was for me but all the other cut scenes have been fine so far.

Can't comment on whether Ben was right or not but it was an entertaining and informative review anyway.

IGN's review was crap. Complete and utter crap. I question the "console allegiance" of the person who wrote it, because while the claims aren't baseless, they're HARDLY as crippling as he makes them sound. He gives virtually no credit to the package on the whole, nor does he give any credit for fun factor. He ends up rating every single category a 9, but because the gameplay got a 7, the entire game gets a 7.

Yeah, that makes a ton of sense. It just annoys me no end when high-profile sites like that produce such embarrassing reviews. GameSpot's is much better, although still a touch too harsh, IMO. If you didn't notice, Aaron reviewed it...and while I agree with most of what he said, I think he harps too much on the length. While I do believe it can - and does - affect a consumer's thought process ("do I really want to pay $60 for 6-8 hours?"), I don't believe it affects the QUALITY of the game, which is what I'm trying to score.

I'm not sure when we started having our review scores negatively impacted by the length of the game and "how good a buy" it is. I really don't think it should matter in the final numerical score, as we're grading quality...just because something is short or long; that doesn't have any impact on quality, UNLESS the game feels rushed or dragged out. I'm almost certain Aaron would've given the game the same score I did if it hadn't been so short, and I believe that's wrong. But hey, his opinion counts, too.

I suppose part of it could be whether or not the review tries to factor in value for money.

That's a clue as to just how bad IGN's review was: GameSpot DOES factor that in with their Value score. IGN does not, and they still scored it a full point lower.

I played it on my roommate's PS3. It's okay. Not a bad game, but not really anything special, and definitely not worth all the hype it got. And it is waaaay too short.

To say it's "not anything special" is completely and utterly incorrect.

i agree, between 1984 and the early 90's, if you had a game that either didnt have amazing replay factor or at least gameplay that would last months, you would have been shot.
it was really when Sega and Nes (imo) started pumping out better quality graphical games that the boundaries shifted on what made a quality game.

people forget while reviewing these games that we are in different times to when Jetset came out. and that 6-8 hours is now the norm. because most gamers would probably move on to a new game in 8 hours.

obviously this shouldn't 'really' be the case...thankgod for GTA, GT, FF, MGS....

i dont think being short is a bad thing, and i dont think 6-8 is that bad, as you play it, and then maybe even trade it in for something else after a few replays. at least you would replay a game that long.

How can I be utterly incorrect about something like my opinion of a video game's quality?

I actually thought IGN's review was pretty close to spot on. The game looks really pretty; beyond that, meh. There were gameplay problems and I thought the story was just okay. It's a decent game, but it's not something special that I'm going to want to go back and play over and over again (not that doing so would require much time. ZING~!).

It's incorrect because the overall consensus - outside of IGN's trash review - is that Heavenly Sword sports the best voice acting and even animation acting ever seen. That alone is very, very special. Most everyone acknowledges it, even if they're not giving super high scores to the game.

It's not just pretty; it's an overall polished and refined package you very, VERY rarely see. I would never score the game over a 9, and you may notice I gave the gameplay and control in the low 8s, but that doesn't change the "special." And there's a lot of it in HS, and that's not dependent on your opinion.
