This thread highlights a lot of the reasons I've yet to buy a PS3. The reviews for the exclusive games like Heavenly Sword seem to generally (taken overall) lean towards giving the impression that they are worth buying if you have a PS3 without quite justifying purchasing a console for them. Currently my mental list has Ratchet & Clank as being very likely to be worth it, Heavenly Sword as possibly worth it, Folklore as a little iffy, Lair as very iffy and Resistance: Fall of Man's appeal hindered a bit by my owning a console inundated with quality shooters. Going forward Final Fantasy XIII is the only exclusive title I'm aware of (though I'm sure there could be more that aren't Metal Gear or Gran Turismo) that personally appeals to me as likely to be excellent.
As I've said elsewhere though it's mainly down to already owning a 360 with excellent third-party support. Discounting the multi-format games and based purely on its exclusives the PS3 isn't quite there for me yet.

Don't forget Warhawk, please. Lots of people around here love that game.
![]() Other than that, I know what you're saying. But I will say that everyone ADORES R&C, and it's plenty long enough to justify a purchase. As I said before, I believe any avid gamer should have Heavenly Sword in their collection simply because of what that title achieved. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune comes out in November, and don't forget about God of War III next year (in addition to MGS4 and FFXIII, which you already mentioned). White Knight Story is another one I'm really looking forward to (it's Level 5's PS3 RPG), along with Disgaea 3. Oh, and Unreal Tournament III is going to be awesome, regardless of when it comes out...and not only will it arrive first on the PS3, it should be better than the 360 version (just a guess). Also, this year we have Haze exclusive to the PS3. That's a few to chew on, but again, I do understand the viewpoint. The PS3 is an expensive system, after all. At the same time, with all the games right around the corner and the recent price drop, I'd like to think this is a great time to pick one up.

Things like Warhawk and UT3 seem to have all their merit in online play which isn't a draw for me, and I'm waiting on reviews for things like Uncharted before I make up my mind on them. I'm not sure about Haze because I've never rated Free Radical's ability to craft a decent singleplayer mode in the Timesplitters games, but any shooter that makes the effort to incorporate offline/local co-op has a huge amount of added appeal.
So while the PS3 isn't quite there for me yet I'd be very surprised if I could say the same a year from now. 2008 is likely to be the year that really makes the console, which lends weight to the idea that Sony would have much preferred to launch a year later, had Microsoft and Nintendo not forced their hand.

And yeah, I'm with you Benny. There's some decent games out for the PS3, but nothing that makes we want to go out and buy it right now, particularly given the price and the fact that one of my best friends at school already has one. I'm going to be awfully tempted when MGS4 and GoW3 come out though.

I think the main plus to owning two systems is that I can benefit not only from the exclusives for both platforms but I can also pick and choose which of the multiplatform games I go for. Blazing Angels I would by for the 360 because that was ported to the PS3 but if a game is ported from the PS3 then you guys are going to lose out on quality.
I also think that in the next year or so, any multiplatform games which are built from the ground up on their respective systems will be better on the PS3 than the 360, unless you are EA.

That's not acceptable. It's not even passable. It's disastrous, and that's one of the biggest reasons I would suggest a PS3 purchase above an Xbox 360. Why? Because two (or three, or four) Xbox 360s cost a lot more than one PS3. ![]()

I'm still on my first 360, purchased last Christmas and used constantly throughout the year. It technically doesn't start up with a hard drive attached (it claims it has insufficient power) but I found a workaround that's only a small inconvenience. When we thought the problem was with the hard drive Microsoft support was fantastic, sending us a new hard drive which arrived in a couple of days without needing us to send in the defective one (which I've now got working again). The high failure rate is definitely the biggest drawback of Microsoft's need to release the 360 as soon as possible, and even if they were essentially forced into it it's still good that they increased the warranty length for those specific failures.
Oddly, the only console I've had sufficient problems with to force me to buy a new one was the PS2, which was so plagued with disc read errors that manual laser adjustment couldn't fix it. The redesigned smaller model works fine though.

Bottom line is that the 360 defective rate reported by its five major retailers is over 30%. It's why GameStop no longer can afford to offer their extended warranty on new 360 systems. The same five retailers report about a 1% defective rate for the PS3. The two systems are night and day, reliability-wise.

Anybody I talked to who was plagued with DREs also used their PS2 as a DVD player (usually as the primary player), so I think that's where the problem stemmed from. Mine was used by some fairly chronic pausers who would sometimes leave it paused for an hour or more, which seems to be fine on a dedicated player but was hell on the PS2. It's not something I think Sony were responsible for in the same way that Microsoft are responsible for the 360's issues. Never had any trouble with the original Xbox though.
I didn't mean to imply that I don't think it was Microsoft's fault or that they shouldn't be thoroughly criticised for it or anything, in case that's how I came across. As far as my 360 is concerned it's just a case of when it goes wrong, not if. I'm hoping to keep it ticking over until at least January, simply because I don't want it to be sent away over Christmas.

I am thankfully still on my 360 launch machine but I haven't put in over many hours with it so that might be helping it to last. I understand I am definitely one of the lucky ones.
