it's just a cluster. people have clustered consoles before (I recall people do the same to hacked xboxes running linux), although it's probably easier on the ps3 because it supports linux out of the box.

still.. bloody good!

i sent that link to my mate who works for City Bank, and they have done exactly this! they had the Cell chip way before any PS3 was on the self.. and thats what they have used it for, bunged a load of cell chips in and stood back and watched it glow.

(ok, at this point.. you see that im not that technical.. but im trying).

Apparently clustered and calculating like a b'stad all the figures they need. I remember him at the time banging on about how incredible it was...

ps... i think Sega's computer is probably more powerful... lol

Dillon - do you have a carbon monoxide problem in your home (and your work)? You've been in rare form these last few weeks...

You sure your friend knows what he is talking about? For some reason i find it hard to believe that your friend says Citi Bank just got the Cell Chips. I know IBM is implemented Cell Chips into there new Blade Servers but i have yet to hear them being released.

Quote:
Blade server

IBM has presented the QS20 blade server based on two Cell processors, originally running the 2.6.11 Linux kernel.[18] The prototypes ran at 2.4GHz. Current systems run at 3.2 GHz, providing 205 GFLOPS single-precision floating point performance per CPU (or 410 GFLOPS per board). IBM also expects to arrange seven blades in a single rackmount chassis (similar to their BladeCenter product line) for a total performance of 2.8 TFLOPS (or 284 GFLOPS in double precision) per chassis. However, the performance numbers released by IBM are still theoretical, and the real-world performance could be significantly different from theoretical expectations.

Mercury Computer Systems, Inc. has released blades, conventional rack servers and PCI Express accelerator boards with Cell processors.
-Wikipedia

Quote:
The first major commercial application of Cell was in Sony's PlayStation 3 game console. Mercury Computer Systems has a dual Cell server, a dual Cell blade configuration, a rugged computer and a PCI Express accelerator board available in different stages of production. Toshiba has announced plans to incorporate Cell in high definition television sets. Exotic features such as the XDR memory subsystem and coherent EIB interconnect[2] appear to position Cell for future applications in the supercomputing space to exploit the Cell processor's prowess in floating point kernels.
-Wikipedia

For some reason i would think if Citi Bank was doing what you said it would be known.

yep Lazer, my mate really knows what he's talking about. about a year ago the bank got these new cell chips, i remember him telling me all about them. he programs in those sort of circles where he is asked to make the impossible happen, and usually sorts it out. but I remember him telling me about these cell chips and how incredible they are, he is a big PS fan anyway, so knew about these chips and so was quite excieted.. I did post all that here at Psxe back then too..

so anyway, i sent him this link and he wrote back saying thats basically what they have done. the bank has put these chips together to make amazingly fast calculations. now as you can see, i dont know the technical terms and cant wow you with the use of the Enlish language, but all i know is that this is basically what Citi Bank have done. apparently theyre one of the biggest banks in the world (?? of which i didnt know) so they got to try this new cell chip out, and so far theyre all rather happy about it.

maybe i shouldnt be posting about this then? lol.. well, i havent mentioned any names, and i dont work for them, so i think its probably ok!

i can ask him more technical questions and paste and post what he says if you want to know more?

Are you sure they aren't using servers such as the Blade Servers from IBM which contain cell chips. I understand CitiBank is the largest of its kind in the world and 3rd largest in the United States, but in the end it's a band not a chip or chipset manufacturer. They are probably using servers which are running under the cell chip. And servers are meant to run at high performance and meant to be connected to each other.

Ask your friend if he can tell you what type of servers Citibank uses? I'm assuming they are Blade Servers since Cell Chip is manufactured by IBM.

ok i will.. i really cant tell you if they 'got a load of chips in' or are using what you are talking about.. probably the blade servers maybe? (surely?)... i'll ask him!!

still, point is that they are using the cell chip (in what ever capasity) to make trillions of calculations and apparently its incredible... lol, i find that comforting to know that its in the PS3

cant wait for next friday... looks like DK and the rest of the people who preordered their PS3 from Play.com might be getting it early...

anyway, yep.. i'll ask him monday
