I have installed my new HDD just fine and it works like a charm. PS3 booted up and my profiles are all there as they were before. My problem is that when I go to use the Restore Backup utility, the PS3 is not recognizing the external drive I used to preform the backup. It recognized it 20 minutes ago when I backed the system up, but it refuses to see it now that I want to restore.

Has anyone experienced this problem and knows how to solve it? I greatly appreciate any help and advice!

Thank you!

No I'd considered that but if his PS3 was able to recognize the external HDD when he backed it up then it had to have already been formatted in FAT32, otherwise he wouldn't have been able to back up in the first place. I don't know what would cause the problem he's describing above, I'm at a loss.

Yeah, but I hear they get hot. I'd just stick with 5400. If you need speed, get an SSD.

Yes, as long as the hard drive is 2.5", SATA and 640GB or smaller. The larger drives are 3mm too thick and won't fit properly into the cage/slot section.

Is your screwdriver too big? You have to use smaller ones. If you have the right size, they come off so easily it's not even funny.

lol, also be wary of stripping those screws or you'll be screwed.

Just put a new drive in my PS3 (Western Digital Scorpio Blue 500 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 2.5 Inch, 8 MB Cache, 5400 RPM SATA II). Everything went really smoothly. The screws weren't really a problem - use a #0 Phillips screwdriver.

My only question is this: It's a 500 GB drive, but I'd read several people say you only get 465 GB once you install it in something. Okay, that's fine, but when I put it in the PS3, is says I only have 412/465 GB to start with. What? I'm losing almost 1/5th of the drive's capacity and there's nothing on it yet! I just loaded the firmware update onto it, but that was on a 2 GB thumb drive, so it couldn't have taken up 50+ GB on the drive. Anybody know where all this space went to?

It's not really a big deal, I went from 16 GB left to the high 300's, but I'd at least like to know.

I'm not sure where it is (I thought it was earlier in this same thread), but I made a post very similar to this one when I upgraded my PS3 with a 250 GB HDD. And like you said, although it says 500 GB or 250 on the box, when it's installed into your computer or PS3 it comes out to be less, in your case 465 and in mine it was something like 232. But after I restored all my data and re-downloaded everything I had on my old drive I noticed that it said I was using a significantly larger chunk of drive space than I was before, and I never figured out why or what caused it. I eventually came to the conclusion that it didn't really matter because even now I still have over 150 GB of free space so I'm not worried about running out any time soon.
