I've only ever set up a wireless connection on an XP machine, but I just got an older (read: very cheap) laptop. It's a Gateway Solo 9500 running Windows 2000 Professional. I also got a Orinoco (Lucent Technologies) Gold 11Mbit/s WiFi card with it. It's a Lucent PC24e-h-fc card. No software included.
The system underwent a complete reformat/reinstall prior to my inheriting it. It appears that the card software was not installed (can't find it anywhere on the hard drive). Any suggestions on where to get the software for it and how to set up the WLAN connection would be appreciated. Edit: The main battery appears to be shot. It'll run on AC, but it won't hold a charge. I see a new main battery will run over $100, but a second battery (can be plugged into the modular bay currently holding a 3.5" floppy drive) is only about $20 including shipping. Would the machine work using just the "additional" battery? Would using both the worn out main & the new additional battery work? Or would that just bring the new additional battery to an early death?

I'm not going to guarentee it will work, but most big computer companies have download centers to get drivers for pretty much every part they ever sell, just go through the lists to find your computer model, operating system, etc. I looked and I found an Orinoco driver, I'm not sure if it will work but it says it's the wireless one, so you can give that a shot here:
http://support.gateway.com/support/d...id=16 4365941 As for the battery issue, I'm not 100% on that either, but its odd that the second battery is only $20 compared to the $100 one, unless both are different sizes. It should work, but then again you might be able to ebay one of the more expensive ones.. It will probably work a lot better for portability either way. |

Edit: I also realize now that you said it went in the floppy drive area so it probably is a much less powerful battery.. I almost want to say something that size wouldn't last too long if at all. But for $20 its a good price to at least test, and if you have to get the other battery, you'll have both for even better life.
Another thought though is that older Dell Inspirons used floppy slot batteries and those ran fine, so you might be able to pull it off (for some reason the quick reply and editing isn't working right now ) |

Thanks Norrec. I'm home from work now, and I'm just about to start hammering away. Here goes nothing...
Oh, and yes, the "additional" battery is much smaller (6-cell vs. 9-cell, 3100 mAh vs. 5400 mAh).

Drivers needed for your card:
Sign up (It's Free) and download this driver then use it to install card if you already haven't. http://members.driverguide.com/drive...riverid=377660 This will get your wireless Lucent PC24E-h-FC card working. EDIT: Norrec already posted link directly from gateway. It'll do the same. Sorry i should have clicked on link first. ![]()

Thanks - both of you guys. I actually had already found and installed a new driver. It was getting the card to recognize my wireless signal that was confounding me.
Working now, though (I'm on that machine now). I'm impressed with how well it works, actually, seeing as it's so old. Now to get a battery; this cord sucks...

If you know what you're doing, it's not so bad. It's just the figuring out what needs to be done that blows.
It's all good now, though. ![]()
