Remember your post back in 2004 asking about whether the long life milk stored on the shelves is a 'staple' in the UK and what's in it?
Well I finally got off my ass to answer this properly. (I spotted a guest looking at it and when I re-read I realised that no one had actually answered.) UHT milk or Ultra High Temperature milk is heated to 145 degrees C for 2 seconds to kill ALL the bacteria whereas normal milk of varying fat levels is only heated to much lower temperatures over slightly longer periods of time. The higher temperature means more bacteria is killed and so doesn't have to be refrigerated until opened and it has a much longer 'unopened' life. The shorter time under the heat means less of the nutritional goodness is lost too. I would say it is common with our older generation but no so much for everyone else. I would say that many households probably have a carton tucked away somewhere just in case the proper milk they are using has gone off before they date on the lid.

So we did. I had some when I first moved in to my house in case I ran out of milk and couldn't get more. It takes some getting used to.
At least I spend some of my time doing something constructive (posting here) rather than wasting my whole day fiddling with Balance Sheets and Profit & Loss accounts for people who quite frankly don't appreciate what I do.

You guys managed to kill that thread before I even had a chance to read it
![]() Gabe, I have a vague recollection of that topic, but I never would have guessed it was three years ago! Too funny - thanks for taking the time to answer ![]() ~~~~ This seems like a mostly-appropriate place to state this next: I have a friend moving from Montana to London sometime next month. Any words of wisdom, suggestions, etc., to pass on to him?

I hope he's ready for the increased cost of living over here. London is one of the most expensive places to live in the UK but if he can afford a house there, day to day living shouldn't be a problem.
Not really got much advise at the mo.. Where abouts in London is he moving to? Hawkster may be able to help you better than anyone else on here.
