Default who here owns a gun?

now.. if you dont want to say, then dont.

but do you? and if you dont.... would you?

and if you would.. why dont you.. and if.. ok, ok... you get the gist.

thing is, that Gun crime is getting bigger and bigger in the UK, and I know that some of us Blightarians might be thinking alone the lines of getting tooled up.. to protect ourselves!

personally i wont, not unless it turns in to SA over night, and i dont think that will happen.

but the majority of this board (Hah.. not for long ) are American, and it has been shown on television, that in some states all you need is a bank account to own a shotgun, and even then its the Bank that give the darn thing! lol:

so is everyone as cool with it as its made out to be?

this is just morbid curiosity... btw

I've got several that I use for hunting or target/skeet shooting. It's not especially hard to buy a gun in most parts of the country (Here in Iowa to purchase a long gun, you just have to be at least 18 with no significant criminal record. You have to be 21, again without a record, and have a pistol permit to buy a handgun), but I think the stories you've heard are probably a bit exaggerated. And everyone is certainly NOT "cool" about the gun laws here, you'll find plenty of anti-gun activists.

I had a break-in a few years ago (back when AdvancedGamers was still a site; anyone remember that?), so my parents got a gun and an alarm system. I know how to use it, but I sure as hell hope I don't have to, because I know I would shoot first, ask questions later.

lefty.... did your parents show you how to use the gun or did you go somewhere to train? or was it just kinda common sense?

anyway, yeh.. its all kinda weird to me this gun thing. its like in SA its just normal in some places to have bullets whizz past your ears on the wayto te local shops and for you to protect your home with uzi's and rocket launchers. to safe guard the family car by fixing fuel pipes to it so that it burns anything that comes near it.

kinda out of control

It's certainly not just common sense, particularly in the case of a handgun. I've basically grown up around guns (my dad taught me to shoot when I was probably around 10 years old), but I've still gone out of my way to get further training and I try to practice as much as I can. If you're going to buy one, I would definitely recommend that you get some sort of training (both in safety and in how to shoot properly) and that you get in lots of target practice to get used to shooting. Having a gun isn't worth a whole hell of a lot if you don't know how to use it properly.

And Dillion, don't look at SA as some sort of model for what gun use is like, or what it's like to be around guns, it's exaggerated to an absurd degree.

trust me!! i wont be buying a gun! i dont like guns, they are not a part of the society i live in. if i have to protect myself or my family i will use the martial arts that I have done since i was 7 for that, and even then running away is the best form of survival.

no, im asking in the way to start up a conversation on how or what it is like to live in a country where guns are accepted to a certain degree, I work with a lot of South Africans, and they all pretty much agree on that if you go out you carry a gun, and they will just sit there and talk about then as if they are part of the funiture.

although most of them come from just outside Capetown and a couple from Bloomfontein, and they dont agree. the guys from Bloomfontain still all have guns, but dont talk about them as wildly as the others do.

i do worry about the UK, today the Priminister was in talks about a rising issue with kids being shot in the uk, and now it seems that if they find out that youre part of a gang, then the law will lean far more heavier on you than if you wernt.

not good. the kids with these guns arent responsible like you or lefty, they wernt shown by their dads or have been to some place where they can train to use a gun, they aere using what common sense they have in order to fire the weapon.. and as you have already said.. "It's certainly not just common sense". they are just pointing and pulling the trigger, a form of respect seeker rather than a weapon of death.

Whoop, didn't realize you were talking about South Africa, I for whatever reason assumed that with SA you meant San Andreas from GTA, which seemed sorta goofy to me. I can't really speak as to what it's like in South Africa, I don't have any idea what it's like over there.

And look, I'm not saying guns are always a good thing. Obviously in the wrong hands they can be terrible. But, that's not the fault of the gun, it's who's using it ( or as the saying goes, "guns don't kill people, people kill people"). In the vast majority of cases they're perfectly safe and are a viable form of protection and entertainment.

lol... now your reply makes sence, fkg san andreas...

nah, i totally agree with you. its like i was saying, in some states in America some banks will give you a shotgun as a promotional gift.

now what im tryig to drive at is that in the States because its 'become' more acceptible to own and handle a gun, giving one away through a promotion like that isnt as mad as it seems.

because when i saw this happen on that bowling for Columbine film was that this bank was in the sticks or at least in a rather rural place in the states. so not only are the chances of actually having handled a gun previously, but the bank also can at least see that you are over 18 when you are given this gun.

but in the UK whats happening is that we dont have this, we dont have any history with guns, so the people who are using the guns dont come from a place where they keep it locked away and its or home defence blah blah...
if someone in the UK has a gun and doesnt live on a farm, then they are probably more likely going to use it on another human, and it wont be for self defence, more like to show who is boss or for some sort of gain anyway.

so.. whats the answer.. is it inevitable that guns will become more common in the UK, so lets introduce them now.. slowly, but steadily?

or lets stay away from guns, and not let anyone handle any type of firearm?

thing is though, our police get shot because they dont carry guns, the kids get shot because they do carry guns...

my answer... has anyone seen Battle Royal...
