Default Question: Why are there piles of AA batteries on subway tracks?

If anyone is from New York, or has an answer to this question, I would appreciate it. I googled it for about 20 minutes, but couldn't find an answer. The New York times apparently had a column answering the question, but you have to pay to see it. The only thing I can think of is that people who use batteries to listen to music throw them out on the tracks. The same theory applies for used batteries from cameras.

Does anyone know the exact answer?

I'm postive it's from the Xbox 360 controller, I go through 2 AA batts per week, sometimes less in 5 days..

You would think many people have ipods so there's no batts in there. Maybe a sex toy that uses AA? lol

Well it's because there are a hell lot of people in the subway stations selling bulk packages of Generic AA Batteries. By bulk i mean like 20-30 for $2 so a lot of people buy them. But it's a scam. Those Generic AA Batteries suck, they have about a 10-15% lifespan that of a regular battery. So basically they die out fast as hell. I know this, because like an idiot i bought a pack once...

I'm thinking that's probably the main reason.

If that was in the UK national rail would have closed down all tracks withing a 20 mile radius while they investigated.

I am refusing to acknowledge Rosie's comment. It'll hurt my brain.

Rosie buys D sized batteries and is on first name terms with the people at Duracell. What does that tell you.
