I believe this guy's main point is to try to disuade the country from going to wars without a really solid reason. Again, I'm not saying I agree with him, but that appears to be his angle.

Implementing the draft not because we need the personnel but rather to make a political point makes it even worse, IMO.

I'm seventeen years old. This draft would affect me directly, and honestly, I wouldn't mind it as long as:

a) I'm not sent outside of North America or Europe.
b) My college was paid for after my period is over.
c) Women are drafted also.

If I'm not sent into direct combat situations, I don't think that my position would be too bad. I'd be getting paid something like 20k or 40k per year if they paid for my tuition (I doubt that includes room and board in college, but who knows).

The only thing I'd be annoyed with is a male-only draft. All I hear about today is equality and womens' rights, and if a draft comes and they say, "Alright, see you guys later!", that'd just be unfair.

I agree with that. However, it sounded like he was bringing the issue up because of what he sees as a lack of military man-power. The draftees would be kept state-side (it sounded like), while the volunteers would go overseas. Or at least generally speaking. There was a mention of community service type work for the draftees as well.

I didn't get the impression that the main point was to make a political statement. Honestly, though, every government action makes a political statement, intentional or indirect. Just so happens that the would-be sponsor of this bill likes what he sees as the probable political result.

Or at least that's how I saw it. I could be wrong, as I obviously can't speak for him directly.

A draft over here would put discipline back into a society where young adults are allowed to do almost whatever they like. It would suck for people like me who have always been raised to know how to act and treat others but I'm sorry to say that for most people I see, this could only be a good thing.

It justs sounds like an inhuman thing to do. Pulling people out of their homes, telling that they are to be sent to war. Coming back to find out that they get nothing out of it.

Zigg, by the sound of it draft soldiers wouldn't be going to war. They would serve within America whereass those who sign up would go off to fight wars. This could be as much about providing discipline where its needed as wanting more reserves.
