Default 1080i & 1080p - Differences?

Im a little bit dumb when it comes to the HDTV resolutions.
Is there a difference between 1080i and 1080p?

I think i read that the 'p' is 'true' High Definition?

Cheers

They are opposites.

The i in 1080i stands for interlaced (non-progressive scan)
The p in 1080p stands for progressive scan (non-interlaced)

Both are still HDTV because of the 1080. 1080p is usually preferred.

Here's an example in a picture:

Cheers Dmitry.

Can you recommend a good HDTV? That is of reasonable price?
What are the best brands?
I need a new TV and obviously with the PS3 comin out in a few months I want to get one beforehand.

I think a while back I remember reading something you posted and you said Plasma's were the best to get (Out of LCD, DLP's..) Was that you or am I just making that up?

True High Definition is 720p and 1080i (in the standards sense of it). The p just means that the picture is drawn in one pass, meaning higher quality. If anything, after you get to 720p, shoot for anything with a p in it and you'll be good.

Yeah that was me.

I would recommend Pioneer Plasma's, but if they are a little too expensive, Panasonic plasma's ain't all the bad either.

Pioneer PDP-5070HD - 50in - Runs about $3000. Supports HD in 1080i or 720p. Great plasma.
Components:
1 x USB, 2 x HDMI input, 4 x Composite video/audio input, 3 x Component video input, 2 x S-Video input, 1 x SPDIF output, 1 x Composite video/audio output, 1 x Subwoofer output, 2 x RF input, 1 x VGA input
Note: Probably one of the best 50in PDP (Plasma's) w/ HDTV on the market for the price imo.

Panasonic TH-42PX60U - 42in - Runs cheap of about $1400. Supports HDTV on 1080i and 720p.
Components: 2 x HDMI (19 pin HDMI Type A) - Rear, 5 x Audio line-in (RCA phono x 2) - Rear, 2 x Composite video input (RCA phono) - Rear, 1 x Composite video input (RCA phono) - Front, 2 x S-Video input (4 pin mini-DIN) - Rear, 1 x S-Video input (4 pin mini-DIN) - Front, 2 x Component video input (RCA phono x 3) - Rear, 1 x Composite video output (RCA phono) - Rear, 1 x Audio line-in (RCA phono x 2) - Front, 1 x Audio line-out (RCA phono x 2) - Rear
Warning: No Picture in Picture - Only down side!
Note: Great PDP (Plasma) for its price you really can't go wrong.

Yep, most HD you won't find on 1080p at least for a good price you won't.
Usually you can see the 1080p on DTV supportability. but 720p is great as it is.

I was just reading up on another forum that the Wii only offers 480p. I looked up a website that listed some differences in case anybody is still looking into this.

this website a little over-exaggerates progressive vs interlaced.

Interlaced is probably worse, but you never see it like that @ 1080i.

I've been looking at a lot of TV's on the internet and I've found that generally most of them are 1080i and I was just wondering about the PS3 downscalling issue.

If i got a TV that was 1080i and the game supported 1080p does that mean it would downscale it to 480?
Or will PS3 games support BOTH 1080i and 1080p or can it only be one?

Thanks
