Does the TV support 720p and 1080i? If so, go for 720p because 720p is better looking than 1080i (and you wont' have any downscaling issue because most games render at 720p :P).

1080p and 1080i actually make a big difference in gaming.

You don't want to use "i" for anything that moves fast, like games, movies, etc. "i" is only suitable for news or watching stills (pictures).

If your screen is 1080i and the game supports 1080p, you will need to select 1080i or 720p...latter is recommended. The game will probably downgrade it for you automatically.

Lazer...I believe the Pioneer 5070 supports 1080p. The older Pioneers only do 1080i.

Just re-surfacing this thread.
I was just looking at TV's on the Argos site and I came across this...

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produc...elevisions.htm

My question is for those who know a bit about HD, is that that TV's listed resolution is 1920x1080i pixels but underneath it says progressive scan?
Is this a typing error? shouldnt it be 1080p if its progressive scan?

Cheers

Ok Here's the deal with this TV.

This is an LCD. All LCD's by nature are progressive scan. Therefore many say which will it show a 720p or 1080i image, but since the LCD's by nature are progressive scan it'll most likely de-interlace the image to 1080p.

Because this LCD is native to 1,920 x 1,080 you will see a true 1080 HD picture. Again i believe it should be 1080p based on the nature of LCD's but i could be wrong.

As far as the price point it's an excellent price.

Just wanted to say that 1080i is perfectly fine for gaming. I prefer to play all of my games in 1080i, it simply looks sharper. It's a visual difference that most people won't immediately notice. If you're on a slight budget, at least make sure your HD set has a decent internal scaler and will render 1080i. But 1080p and 1440p will soon become the new forefront in resolution clarity. The HD market is moving far faster than anyone could've imagined.

That said, consider the following brands:

Sony
Samsung
Panasonic
Pioneer

My 360 looks spiffing on 1080i. Blazing Angels rocks

It's better to display it to your TV's native resolution. That way the signal is in no way downscaled by the TVs (most 720p tvs do a poor job at de-interlacing and scaling 1080i to 720p). Native Resolution > *

Again like i said it's because you use an LCD. You're most likely running on something between 1080i or 1080p, bah or let me say it better, the 1080i looks better on an LCD usually over a Plasma. Though you are right the difference is almost unnoticeable to the naked eye.

Quote:
"To have 1080p in a plasma is very difficult and very expensive, and it's not readily available so you have to really search for it," says Gene Ornstead, senior LCD TV product manager at ViewSonic. "Plasma is not going to be able to keep up because it's just too complex of a technology with the glass, the plasma structure and the driver electronics. There's a lot more electronics on the back of a plasma than there is on an LCD."

Ornstead adds that, with further upcoming advances in LCD technology, it's entirely possible that a 42-inch LCD could sell for under $1,000 with an extra $150 premium for 1080p by sometime in 2008.

Also after 1440p we'll see 2160p which is also dubbed "quad HDTV".
