As for the disorganized Dems pulling of the collective victory, from what I understand, much of the credit is due to the head of the Dem party - Dean (of "YeeeeeeeHAAaaaaaaw" fame).
Why do we need social conservatism? The only thing the government is required and authorized to do is protect our freedoms. Legislating morality is not a part of that equation.

There is a difference between legislating morality and protecting the freedoms/rights of innocents.

I agree with you that the Federal government is not allowed (or at least shouldn't be allowed) the power to tell its citizens what they can and can't do, unless it's pertaining to the protection of other citizens and innocent people. Obvious for-instances include the illegality of murder and child abuse.

I'm not saying the Republicans offer the ultimate answers to my dreams in this area, because they don't (I prefer to vote Constitution Party, when candidates are available), but I tend to agree with their platform, generally speaking, more often than I do with the platform of the Democrats.

I'd love to get away from this predominantly two-party system.

Hey I'll love to see a woman president. I like Bill, and he always said him and his wife worked together.
