Well I'm really annoyed.

I was really hoping ANY of the other countries had won it
Estimates are that it could cost at least 3.5 billion pounds! The amount of tourist revenue and new job taxes it will produce is no where near this amount. What a waste of money.

There was a report carried out in May 2004 that said that the cost of the whole event will be on average 250 british pounds PER PERSON! Not per Tax payer, per person so the cost to the hard working guy on the street will be even more. 70% of those polled when they found out this estimate said NO WAY to the olympics. I don't pay my taxes to fund sporting events which are in essence entertainment. I pay for new houses, education, emergency services etc.

People say this will give us something to be proud of. wth?

It'd make me much prouder if the money was used to build more hospitals, schools and houses around the whole of the country and not just in London.

And the pensions problem? Why don't the government put this money into that and it'd go some way to solving the problem. I'm sure the pensioners will be proud of the olympics when they're living out their final years with a substandard lifestyle.

It's typical of this government to waste our money without considering the feelings of the public. You'll also notice that the true estimated costs will only now start to come out because there would have been public outrage.

Londoners are already going to feel the bite not only with an almost immediate increase in council tax but also massively inflated costs of simply living day to day in the capital.

7 out of 10 londoners still object to the costs of the event and the disruption it will cause over the coming years.

I know what you mean Gabe mate. I read this morning that they expect house prices to increase by around 66% as well!!!

I hope mine goes up Still I live just outside London but work in the City. I might have to take the 2 weeks or so off work as the travel will be very bad. Its poor now LOL

Apparently, the fact that the attacks came right after the annoucment is purely coincidental. I'm a little surprised that you all seem so upset about getting the Olympics though, I'd have thought the excitment of having them there, pride in your country for being chosen, and positive exposure for the country would have outweighed the costs. Apparently that's not the case.

They took it out of the Olympics because the new "World Baseball Classic" will be replacing it. It's something new to try and bolster baseball internationally, and already they are making progress with Monday's Home Run Derby format.

I never watch the Olympics, but this I might.

Nobody gave a crap about Olympic baseball anyway, no kid dreams of winning a gold medal, they dream of winning the World Series, even in other countries since the majors are so heavily populated with players from Latin America and, increasingly, Asia (the only places in the world that really give a shit about baseball anyway). The World Baseball thing might be kinda cool to watch if they can get high profile MLB players to play in it. The problem is that I'm not sure many teams are going to be thrilled with their multi-million dollar players risking injury or their pitcher wearing his arm out before they even get to the season. We'll see how it works out.
