I've wanted to get started on editing my own short films and effects, but I'm not sure which route to take. I've heard of so many different programs to use. Lightwave 3D, Electric Image Universe, 3DS MAX, Bryce, Maya, After Effects. I dont even know where to start. If there is a good combo or choice of programs or recommendations that any of you may have, please let me know. thanx

I use Pinnacle Studio, but I am not very happy with it. It's very powerful, but much of the content is locked, despite the program costing $100. I also have big time problems with it crashing, to the point of if I spend 20 hours editing a movie, it will crash on me 30 times or more. I have learned to save often, but it's pretty bad. I know Sony's Vegas Studio (I think that's the name) is really popular, but I haven't used it. I've used the sound editing software, and it's top-notch though.
I just re-read the title, and I am not sure if you are talking about video editing in that batch of stuff. If so, there ya have it. If not, well, I can't help ya ![]() |

Yeh I made a really long post here then realized I didn't know exactly what he was talking about and deleted it.
Anyways if your talking about editing I personally use Vegas 4.0. Its a little hard to use at first but once you get the hang of it then it works like a charm.

sorry that i made it so confusing. I meant to say in my original post is that i want to do special effects and 3D scenes and stuff. Have you ever scene these amateur star wars films? They do there own battle scenes and flybys, and I'd like to learn all of that. Thats kind of along the lines of what i was thinking. Thats also what got me to want to try this stuff.

That would require rotoscoping, if you wanna do it the right way anyway. In that case I'd use photoshop and premire pro. But I also hear that after effects is a little faster for rotoscoping so you might wanna look into that. But beware, those kind of effects take TONS of hours to make since you have to edit every single frame to put say a lightsaber in.

I have already done the lightsaber, and it takes forever to rotoscope them in. I was thinking of other things such as backrounds, and droids and stuff.

I now just wonder what program is better. I'm beginning to do the 3DS Max tutorials, to learn it, but I'm making sure its worth it before I learn it completely. Is there something better? Can this program render high quality realistic things? Those are the questions that i hope to find.
