I was wondering what different stereotypes you have in other parts of the world for people who were born/live in different cities/states/provinces?

For example, in the UK there is a common stereotype that all people who are from Liverpool are car thieves and pety criminals. I'm sure Ray Jay can set me right on that one though


So what stereotypes do you know?

There's a small city about 20 mins north of where I live called Mission. It's pretty much known for it's high production of the marijana plant - major drug problems associated with that place. In highschool, if you were from Mission, people would sometimes tease you about it and call you "dirty", haha. (Apparently one of my teachers was in Europe somewhere, Amsterdam I think, and saw marijana for sale there, "Imported from Mission, B.C." it said ... apparently it's REALLY good stuff, I wouldn't know though)

Living in western Canada here, most of us "Westerners" dislike the eastern Canadians very much. The stupid Canadian Government seems to focus way more on Eastern Canada then over here (espeically with regards to Medicare). Newfies (from Newfoundland) are also made fun of because of their odd accent - they're somewhat "detatched" from the rest of Canada I suppose...

The UK may be tiny but we've got so many different accents it's unbelievable.

I bet if you heard Hawkster (London), Ray Jay (Liverpool) and I (Sheffield) speak you wouldn't believe that we live within a few hundred miles of each other.

Stereotype of Americans:

You fall into one of 2 categories. Either disgustingly obese or supermodel thin/toned.

Just from the pics I've seen on this website that ST is blown straight out of the water.

Has anyone here been to Paris? Is it true that there are NO fat french women there?

That is a very not true stereotype. I have never had anything nicked in Liverpool. Manchester however.....

The worst stereotype is a welsh valley dweller, we dont all say boyo dammit! :P

There's so many stereotypes in America that I don't know where to begin..

American stereotypes, that I know of:

Great Britain: Sophisticated; always include the accent. Christ, your four-year old kids sound smarter than us.

Jewish: Cheap/frugal. Typical stereotype; that one has no base.

Homosexual: Skinny and happy-go-lucky. Lisp included.

African-American: Varies around America, probably, but I think it's more of a robbery/thieve thing.

Those are just the ones that are off the top of my head; I'm sure there are more.

EDIT: My post isn't as much of geography, but as people in general. Sorry.

The Jewish one applies to Scottish people also. From what I've seen it's generally true

If any America that thought that came down to Plas Madoch or Caia Park (extremely "rough" areas within a mile or so from where I live, Plas Madoch is like the 3rd worst in Wales statistically) then they'd think twice about that stereotype

Cockney Wide boys are a big stereotype in other part of Britain, from what I know of at least.
