blu ray seems the better route to go, with capacities of over 200gb already in the works, who wouldn't want that. the only problem being that it'll be more expensive. and they've already announced support for the current codecs, so that wont be an issue.

what we really need to hope for, are players that do both, we shouldn't have to choose.

i'm waiting until there's a player that does cd, dvd, sacd, dvd-audio, hd dvd, blu ray

This is the same shit that happened in the DVD-R/+R war. It was a stupid thing to do. I believe that one of them should die out and the other should do it. Even though i hate it so much what you say is kind of what will probably happen.

200gb? where did you read that. A Quad Layer Blu-Ray which Sony is in the works on is about 100gb.

Expensive may be the only thing, but Sony has stated that on a mass production they are not that much more then DVD's, so we'll see how it turns out on a price perspective.

Though right now both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players are about $1000 each, and i believe Toshiba showed off it's HD-DVD Recorder which i fear to be close to $1500.

How much data can you fit on a Blu-ray Disc?

A single-layer disc can fit 23.3GB, 25GB or 27GB.
A dual-layer disc can fit 46.6GB, 50GB or 54GB.

To ensure that the Blu-ray Disc format is easily extendable (future-proof) it also includes support for multi-layer discs, which should allow the storage capacity to be increased to 100GB-200GB (25GB per layer) in the future simply by adding more layers to the discs.

It strikes me as being a waste of space when looking at the majority of DVD releases. They don't take up a full DVD let alone the 50+gb storage space we're discussing here. I can see the benefits of the additional storage with regards to home use

Image quality can still be much cleaner than DVD. I can see compression artifacts, among other image artifacts in DVDs today.

Yes and yet you miss out on the fact that only half an HD movie can fit onto a Dual-Layer DVD. And wait lets not forget all the 2 DVD Sets of movies you've got, i know i've got many.

Also DVD's are becoming more then just for Movies. Now that you can burn on them they are becoming a type of backup for files. And once Blu-Ray and HD-DVD Burners hit big, imagine not having to buy a 250gb HDD but rather 1 50GB or higher Blu-Ray for a fraction of the cost.

The article also states that Toshiba will begin shipping players and Notebooks with HD-DVD drives later this year.

with talks of holographic hard drives of up to 1tb, and the fact that one blu ray will hold 50gb, we're gonna need bigger hard drives. i don't think blu ray will change that, just like when cd's first came out.

Blu-Ray hold over 100gb and now in the development of 200gb Blue-Ray. Harddrive and Media Discs are 2 completely different things, please don't compare them. They are used for different purposes. Are you telling me you will buy Harddrives with games or HD quality movies on them?

i'm not the one who tried to compare the two. i'm simply saying by the time blu ray hits 200gb, hard drives will be plenty ahead of that.
