How much have the American public donated so far?

I think the UK public at the moment have put together about 65 million pounds (about 114 million US dollars).

Not bad for our pokey little island huh?

Talked to the kid I know from Indonesia and it turns out his family is fine, they weren't in the area that the tsunami hit. That's at least one bright spot in this whole mess.

America donated $350 million at the point of December 31st. I was a little disappointed that Canada didn't donate much, even though their a rich country themselves. But hey, what you gonna do.

Now we're up to about 145,000 deceased.

The G8 are meeting soon to discuss freezing the international debts owed by the affected countries.

I believe Canada has already done that with the affected countries. I'm not sure how much Canadians have put together so far, but I do know that the Canadian government did at first match the US's amount of $40 million, but then the US gave even more money, and I think Canada doubled what they were giving to $80 million (I could be wrong, it could be even more now, who knows). I also know that the Canadian government is matching any donations received from the public. There are talks of benefit concerts that are in the works to help raise money as well.

What is this, a contest? There has already been over 4 billion spent on the disaster, so much money that it's literally plausible that countries won't be able to help fund other much needed aid projects in the near future. Australia donated over 80% of their Foreign Aid budget to this disaster, for example.

Additionally, I find it horrible that India prefers our Marines not be in the region, because it infringes on their 'sphere of influence.' Right now, the death toll could hit well over 250,000 if supplies are not shipped in time, and the Marines are the best equipped to get people the stuff they need, and yet India wants them out of the region.

The politicization of this disaster is disgusting, as is the competitive attitude of which country gave the most.

For me it wasn't about which country gave the most and I don't think all the money raised should go straight this particular cause.

I was simply trying to work towards a rough figure of how much had been raised. I asked about America specifically because most if the guys on this site live there.

The money from all country donations should be pooled and any that isn't used to help those affected by the Tsunami should go to help people elsewhere.

I agree with you Ryan about the reaction of the Indian government. They should put the needs of their people first and politics second.

I never said that. I just hate how people like Michael Moore can idolize Canada for their governmental system and say how the U.S. is so greedy, yet when events like this occur, people seem to look away at all the money the U.S. is donating.

I don't see why you can call this a contest. If the United States gave $2 million, and Canada gave $350 million, I guarentee there would be some kind of uproar against America... I can see it now, Fahrenheit 12/26. The next time a person says, "The U.S. is so greedy and rich; they sit on their fat asses all day and collect money," they should look at the donations.
