I'm thinking about getting a laser printer for my wife for Christmas (she's into scrapbooking, and she often needs to print out small, fine print on funky papers, such as muslin).
I'm not too excited about spending more than $300 (at very most), so I've been thinking about getting a Lexmark E232. I've had a couple of Lexmark all-in-one ink jets, and I've been satisfied with them. Anyone have any input?

Our family just recently got a new laser printer, and it works like a charm. We got the Samsung ML-1740 - http://www.epinions.com/pr-Samsung_M...splay_~reviews
for only $80 after mail in rebates from Office Depot! You should look into www.slickdeals.net , they ALWAYS have a heads up on crazy deals on anything. From memory cards, to movies, to printers, they've got a lot of deals on there. How much is the one you're looking at? It only has 1 review at epinions, but it's a 5/5 (I'd like to know what other people think about it). The review's here if you want to look at it. Hope this helps...

Thanks Sabbas; I'll check out that Samsung.
The Lexmark E232 is part of their E230/330 lineup. The 330s have networking, where the 230s don't. Other than that, they're very similar, near as I can tell. I found a handful of personal reviews (epinions, etc.), and I looked at some professional reviews (pc stores, etc.). All were positive. They said they are work horses, reliable, and cheap. The only negatives were installation in some instances. The user support is pretty weak as well, but everyone said they only needed it for installation help; the printers don't quit once they get set up. The other thing I wanted to know was typical laser printer quality. This thing prints at 600 x 600 dpi maximum (I think; Lexmark calls it something like '1200 image quality', but it's apparently a made-up, propriatary name). I don't have anything to compare that to, though... Thanks for the help.

Well, I've read several reviews on the Samsung, and they were all glowing, with one exception.
Some guy who never actually bought the printer gave it a poor review. He said he gave the poor rating because the toner cartridges were to expensive to justify buying the printer. The toner carts (3000 page) cost $70. That doesn't seem too out of line, compared to others, does it? Have any of you guys heard anything about toner refills? Are they available, and if so, are they cheaper? Most importantly, do they offer acceptible productivity?

Here's another problem:
One reviewer said the printer doesn't support PCL/Postscript drivers. What does that really mean for us non-techies? My wife would use this printer to print out some odd-ball fonts on fancy papers etc. Do you suppose the PCL/Postscript drivers would be necessary for that???

Well, I ended up getting this:
Not exactly a laser printer Also got an extra battery, the fast charger, and a 4-year warranty. Looking forward to filming my son opening presents next Friday ![]()
