Default PC versus Apple!

I recently watched a programme on Channel5 which carried out a number of different tests to try to find out which was better.

I'm not sure if these were all the tests so if anyone else watched it and can think of any others please add

Price:

Two machines were purchased of equivalent spec.

Winner: PC by miles

Ease of use:

Both machines had to be taken out of their packaging, set-up, and then access the programmes website.

Winner: Apple (took about half the time)

Speed:

Two identical photos were loaded onto the machines and at exactly the same time they were asked to emboss the photo.

Winner: PC

Ease of repair:

Both machines were dropped from a 20ft balcony and then they had to be repaired up to a basic functional level.

Winner: PC again. Whereas the PC could be self repaired in about 3-4 hours including going and purchasing the necessary parts the Apple would have taken several days and hundreds of pounds more simply because it could only be repaired at a specialist store.

From this I find that if you want something thats easy to use but is a lot more expensive and more difficult to repair then buy an Apple but if you want something cheaper that's just as fast if not a little faster and can easily be repaired in your own home then I'd buy a PC.

Is this what you guys have experienced or do you tell a different story?

Having only owned a PC I cannot comment from personal experience; I can only base my views on the findings of the programme.

#1 this channel seems like a bias pc lover, i used to be one and magoosh knows that and i'm sorry to say that is bullshit.

First of all no one is an idiot to drop there pc off from 2 stories, 2nd of all apple care will protect your ass on apple pc's.

3rd did they test the Apple G5 out against a PC, i think not, even an AMD 64 would go down against an Apple's G5 Dual 64-bit CPU.

Ummmmm...now lets see, Graphic Designing with Photoshop on a G5 is atleast 50% if not more faster then on a Dual Xeon CPU. Ummmm... A PC with P4 will support up to 4gb of Ram but windows won't even use no more then 2gb of ram while Apple G5 and Mac OSX support up to 8gb of ram.

Ok now lets see, i've been a PC user, and my PC within 3 years i have to repair it almost every year, ether Windows starts ****ing up or something goes wrong, the reliability of your Mac is much better then any goddamn pc. Now ummmm...PC oh shit i got infected with another stupid bug because of cheap Windows Security Hole and IE problems...Mac...runes under UNIX which is based on Linux, giving you Maximum Security and uses something called Safari which is similir to Firefox and is a lot better.

I'm sorry even though i still use pc's i gotta give it up to Apple. I bought a Dell labtop and the 1st week my bluetooth broke. I wish i had bought a 15in PowerBook.

UNIX is based under Linux now? Now that's news!

Oh, and just as to point out, Windows is not synonymous with PCs (I'm on a Linux-Dell computer right now), and parts are parts, and have nothing to do with the PC standard, mostly with Dell.

Granted, I would probably own a mac if I wasn't in Computer Engineering (most of the applications I use are linux or windows based, so what's the point of owning a mac?). But was I a webdesigner or heavily into imagery, I would own a mac.

What it comes down to is what you want to use your computer for. To me, a Mac would be completely worthless.

Sorry for the error, but i know they probably tested a windows pc, since most ppl refer a pc to being a mac.

But mac is much moe reliable and ease-of-use for a beginner in a pc world.

Dmitry, they carried out identical tests on both machines. They weren't biased against Apple.

They dropped them from the balcony just to give them something to fix. I'm sure there are plenty of people who drop their machines while carrying them or spilt drinks on them. What it showed was that given a few hours you could fix the PC yourself whereas the Apple had to be sent off to be fixed and would take days. The guy tried to order a new motherboard for the Apple and they wouldn't let him have one. Apple Care told him he would have to take it to one of their places to be fixed by a professional.

The machine used was a G4 and the spec equivalent PC running Windows. When asked to complete the same task at the same time the PC won. I know the test was pretty basic and maybe would tell a different story if they did a variety of tests on different software but this was only a half hour programme and so they picked something simple which everyone could see and understand.

As for software crashes this is something that maybe they could have looked into. Possibly having the two machines in use for a few months then call the users back in to see how many faults people had. It's possible you're right about the MAC being more reliable.

Ok there the flaw, they used a G4, now tell me this, why didn't they use a G5?

G5 has been out for so long now and they didn't use it.

The reason is because they know the G5 would woop the PC with equvilant specs.

Also G5's are built a lot more sturdier and use 100% Aluminum Cases, as well they are all upgradable, from Ram to HDD to all other drives, oh and did i forget to mention G5 uses PCI-Express, oh yeah no PC has that yet...

That's why they didn't use a G5.

Apple Power Macs did well on Photoshop, but the 64-bit AMD-based systems won handily on most tests.

However, there was only one benchmark, Brian Maffitt's TotalBenchmark comp 1, where the Power Mac G5 beat the fastest PCs we've tested here, which was a disappointment given all the claims that Apple has submitted over the past year about the G5's superiority over any PC.
take notice this was months ago, and amd has released many chips since then. is the dual 2.5ghz g5 even available? i saw pictures of it tho, scary stuff...

its bad when you need water cooling AND a heatpipe for the BACK of the cpu

mac easy to use? yeah. but who uses this slogan "its so easy to use, no wonder its number one" coincidence?

pci express:

Quote:
The Dell Precision 670 is our most scalable, most upgradeable workstation. The Dell Precision 470 is designed to excel in the same compute-intense environment...They also offer separate PCI Express, 64-bit PCIx, and PCI system buses for improved throughput from key subsystems such as integrated Gigabit1 Ethernet, integrated high-performance SATA and integrated SCSI RAID 0/1 storage, and expansion slots.
you've had to repair your pc for 3 straight years? i dont know what you do to those computers, but i haven't touched my computer in well over 2 years with zero problems. and if quality is a problem, than don't buy a dell. and how you got infected with viruses or spyware, has nothing to do with how bad windows is. fact of the matter is, keep your computer secure and you dont have those kind of problems.

so to sum it all up, mac's are cute over priced workstations, that get their butt kicked at everything but photoshop...because as we all know, photoshop is the only program worth using :P

Well yeah the new AMD 64 would beat it, but didn't Virginia Tech build the 3rd most powerful Super-Computers by using a cluster of G5's?
