Default this may be a dumb question in the wrong forum, sorry if it is

i was just wondering if there is such a thing as a program where you can design your own games or programs. you know make your own graphics, create everything yourself. anyone ever heard of any such thing? i am just curious if any thing like that exists for the public to buy.

maya... free personal edition but you can't commercially use it for something like a game then there is the next version which is $2,000 and you could use it to make graphics for game then there's $7,000 for mainly movie professional type stuff...

I tried Dark Basic about a year ago and couldn't make any sense of it, but now that I have 1/2 year of programming Visual Basic behind me, I'm gonna give it another whirl. Wish me luck.

I learned Visual Basic a few months ago. It's pretty simplist compared to what I'm learning right now which is Java. Have any of you programmed on your graphing calculators. It's pretty basic, but toying around with it during school is where I first learned some of the basic principals behind programming.

does anyone know about any books or articles on the web about game programming, probably about the basics becuase i am a total newbie to it. all i can find is books that say you need to know C or C++ programming in advance to reading the book, and i know nothing about that. i am asking this because in the future i would like to try and create my own games. probably with the torque engine that was named. any advice would be helpful.
