It does it with my Gamecube and also on my Wii! They seem to beep whenever they load information on a game disc. I was just wondering why they do this.

I suppose it could just be a reminder that the system is working rather than idle so you don't turn it off.
A bit like the PS3 warning not to turn the machine off when the yellow hard drive light is on which in honesty isn't easy to see if the machine is near the floor.
