Default Sonic Joins the Brawl! Plus Other Wii News

Posted for the second time, thanks to the rollback...

It seemed likely that Sonic was going to be one of the other confirmed guest characters for the next Smash Brothers, and today it was confirmed at a Nintendo press conference in Japan. The Dojo, the official Smash Brothers site that reveals new content every weekday, now has the Sonic info as well as two new movies. This was always the game I said would be worth me buying a Wii, though I ended up with one anyway long before I felt there were games worth buying it for.

Other Wii news, mainly from the press conference: The Mario and Sonic Olympics game will support Miis; Mario Kart Wii will include bikes; Monster Hunter 3 moves from Wii to PS3 due to the PS3's high development costs; several games -
Pokémon Farm, Dr. Mario, a Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles title, Mojipittan Wii, Bomberman, Star Soldier R and Joy Sound Wii - are revealed for the upcoming Wii Ware (Wii Software) service, and there will soon be a DS download channel for demos, special content and... stuff.

It's all being translated from Japanese at the moment but it all seems fairly accurate. No word yet on how many years it will takes all this to filter through to Europe.

Re the development costs for Monster Hunter. I hope they've done their figures right. I know I'd rather pay 1 mill in development and make 5 mill in sales than pay 100k in development but only make 1 mill in sales.

Why would they make less from sales? The Wii installed base is huge, much larger than the PS3 at the moment, with Monster Hunter fitting fairly well into the standard Wii audience.

I imagine it was just a case of how similar the Wii and PS2 are at a technological level. Using a slightly modified engine with similar graphics is a hell of a lot cheaper than adapting it for Cell and rendering it all in 1080p. Capcom as a whole have made made a proper next-gen effort with games targeting the main gamer audience, so it would only be a few games like this that potentially don't seem worth the major upgrading in their eyes.

The DS channel is certainly something to keep an eye on. I'm not a fan of handhelds generally but I do have access to a DS, so being able to try out games will be very welcome.

Double posting, but there's a bit more Wii news: Mario Kart Wii will support twelve player races, apparently with a 'streamlined' matchmaking service. People are assuming this could mean not having friend codes, but it could just as easily mean a variant of the anonymous service that will be used in Brawl. Twelve racers sounds pretty manic though, especially with all the potential traps and weapons that could be in play...

I just can't wait to beat the living daylights out of Mario with Sonic, I've wanted this so badly for years that I may actually buy a Wii just for it

OMG. Now that Sonic is coming to Brawl. I'm not pissed at Nintendo for delaying the game. This is the game i'm most anticipating. I can't wait until it comes out.

I hope it's a budgetary problem, because there's plenty of good games for the DS.
