I've done about 7 hunts now. The one against the tank like creature in the mines was a bugger.

I have 3 quickenings now but can't really get my head round how to use them effectively.

Dillon, if you highlight unexplored areas of the licence board, it tells you if it's a quickening or armour or whatever. This is how I found them.

The werewolves do give you quality skin if you poach them. Don't know if it's useful.

How the hell do I get Aero?? It's never available to buy. Do I need to sell certain items to unlock it. I scanned a walkthrough and on a much earlier section it says to use Aero.. I'm level 19-22 and about to leave Bhujerba to further the story.

In the mines I glimpsed an enemy beyond where you can go. Level 45 bat!! I'm about 23 hours in.

Yeah, powerful enemies will lurk in areas you shouldn't be in. LOL As for Aero, I remember getting that relatively early on...are you sure you've checked every magic store for it? It's just like any other spell; you have to learn it and buy it to use it. So if you've learned it already, you just have to find the shop that sells it. There's no "unlocking" of spells or abilities to buy; they just show up.

As for the Quickenings, I'm going to write up a brief tutorial on that right now. I guarantee it's a question that's going to keep popping up in here, so instead of answering it a dozen different times, you guys can just refer to this. Gimme a sec...

Quickenings:

Hopefully, this will help you guys a lot when it comes to these things. Some of this is in the Quickenings FAQ you can find over at GF, but I've condensed it down and added a few points of my own.

Quickenings are powerful abilities that use up one full Mist Bar (MP) to perform. However many Quickenings you have dictates how many Mist bars you have. When your character only has one, you have one Mist Bar. When you have all three, you'll have three Mist Bars. This serves to double and triple your MP as well, so it's a good idea to unlock all three Quickenings for your characters as fast as possible.

Each character has a Lv. 1, 2, and 3 Quickening. And you need one, two, and three Mist Bars respectively to execute the Quickenings. Check the power numbers below, but remember the damage you do is ALSO reliant on your character's level. Therefore, a Lv. 25 character will do far more damage with any Lv. 2 Quickening as a Lv. 10 character will do with the same Quickening.

Quickening Power Level:

Lv. 1- 90
Lv. 2- 140
Lv. 3- 230

The key to big damage is in the chaining of the Quickenings and the ensuing Concurrence. You can chain Quickenings between any characters on the battlefield who have learned them AND have the Mist Bars (which must be FULL) to do them. When you start the Quickening, your character names will appear in the bottom right along with a timer.

Executing Quickening Chains: If a character's Quickening appears in white, it means he/she can perform it, and you simply hit the corresponding button. If they're all greyed out, and you know you can perform other Quickenings, hit the R2 button to shuffle the options until you see white, which is an executable action.

You want to start a Quickening chain with the LOWEST Quickening you have. In other words, somebody's Level 1. And then, if you know your Quickenings well enough, you select the LOWEST level Quickening, building up through Lv. 2 and 3. The FASTER you make your selection early on, the MORE time you save. If you have to shuffle a lot, you won't get a very long chain. With every second extra you take to make your choice, that's less time you have with the next Quickening.

Sometimes, a Mist Charge will show up instead of a Quickening. If it's there, use it, and then use the ensuing Quickening. A Mist Charge refills your MP, which means that character will immediately be able to do a Quickening. So your process should be as follows-

1. If you see a Mist Charge for anyone, use it, and then use the Quickening that comes right after it. So just keep pressing the same button for the Mist Charge until the Quickening goes off. Should be fast.

2. If no Mist Charge is there, choose the LOWEST Quickening. So if you have the option of Basch's Flame Purge (Lv. 3) or Vaan's White Whorl (Lv. 2), choose the latter. Obviously, if you're getting near the end of the Chain and you know you won't have much time left, you may want to go for the higher one for more damage. But for BUILDING a chain early on, this is what you want to do.

3. If nothing is available, hit R2 to shuffle and then follow steps 1 AND 2.

Each time, regardless of how long you take, you'll have slightly less time. Therefore, you'll eventually run out of time and the chain will end. When it's over, you will get a Concurrence depending on the number and type of Quickenings you used. See below, with damage count for each:

Inferno (90): Use a Lv. 1 Quickening 3 times
Cataclysm (110): Use a Lv. 1 Quickening 8 times
Torrent (130): Use a Lv. 2 Quickening 3 times
Wind Burst (155): Use a Lv. 2 Quickening 6 times
Whiteout (215): Use a Lv. 3 Quickening 5 times
Ark Blast (175): Use Lv. 1/2/3 Quickenings 2 times each
Luminescence (205)- Use Lv. 1/2/3 Quickenings 3 times each
Black Hole (253)- Use Lv. 1/2/3 Quickenings 4 times each

All Quickenings AND Concurrences deal NON-elemental damage, so even though it looks like Inferno is fire-based, it won't heal fire-absorbant enemies. So you don't ever have to worry about enemies or bosses being immune to any Quickenings or Concurrences.

The unfortunate thing about Quickenings is that they're basically useless against the tougher optional bosses in the game, just because they can't possibly do enough damage to matter, and you waste all your MP. For example, the Hell Wyrm has around 9 million HP, and the most damage you could ever hope to do with a Quickening Chain is maybe around 75k (and that's if you're REALLY lucky and get the Black Hole Concurrence). So you do the math. This is why Quickenings are much more useful early on, and great against certain bosses. But remember, you have to plan accordingly: you won't have any MP (or very little) after the Chain, so the boss has to be dead or close to dead, or you might be screwed. In other words, try to FINISH fights with Quickenings; don't START them with Quickenings...unless, for some reason, you're convinced one big chain will end the battle quickly.

Okay, so there you go. That's the best I can do. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. None of this will even matter until you have multiple Quickenings, anyway; early on, with only one Quickening per character, there isn't much you can do, although you can get some good Inferno or Cataclysm chains. Good luck!

P.S. My personal record is as follows- 17 hits, Black Hole Concurrence, dealing 72,656 HP damage to a Lv. 62 Abadon and 25k - 40k damage to four surrounding enemies. All three characters were Lv. 80. I didn't bother trying to do more when I was Lv. 95, though, just because Quickenings had ceased to be useful. The most number of HITS I've gotten is 20, but I didn't get the Black Hole Concurrence so the damage wasn't as high.

er wow..

nice one Ben!!!!!!!!

ok, will have to read this in parts, lol..

i was level 9 with no quickenings, now everone has one quickening and Vaan has two.. plus im lev 13 now.. so im going back to the dreadnought to fight Ghis!

tho one thing.. i so glad of libra!!! and theres sooo many bad tuff guys out on those sands! lol.. like some guy who just looked like a trible man.. kicked the utter shite out of me and everone with me! lol..

what a game!

these quickenings are qute deep.. im going to have to learn more about them.

one thing tho.

you can only learn three per character?

and those three (correct me if im wrong) are all predetermined? i say this because you cant have the same grid square of a Q as someone else. so when i had Bacsh.. his Q was somethig.. I knew this because tho i had unlocked it, I hadnt brought it, but could see its name. but then I chose that square for Vaans Q.. so when i eventually chose another grid square for Bacsh's Q.. it was the same name of the last Q.. does that make sense?

so heres my question with that in mind...

i have two Q's with Vaan up by the gambits and other stuff (top right)... and am going for my third and final Q, but will use the Q's that are down (left ) by the weps... does this make a difference in the Q's or will they be the same as if i had chosen my third from the top right?

ps.. where the hell can i find ether? lol

No, it makes no difference which Quickening space you uncover and learn with each character. It's going to automatically be that character's next Quickening. And when you learn it, that space will no longer exist for another character, but there are enough spaces for three Quickenings for each character.

In other words, you said you're going for Vaan's third (and final) Quickening. So feel free to simply go for the closest Quickening space, because no matter which Q space on the License board you uncover, it will be Vaan's Pyroclasm. So you needn't worry about getting the wrong Quickenings, or character's stealing another character's Quickenings. This can't happen. Each will eventually get their pre-assigned three.

Espers, on the other hand, are very different. Only ONE character can learn them, and because of that, only ONE character can summon it. So in other words, if you learn Belias (your first Esper) with Vaan, he will be the only one ever able to summon Belias. Remember that. However, it's unfortunate that Espers are borderline useless in the game, so in the long run, it doesn't make much difference.

As for Ethers...sorry, but you'll only be able to find them in treasure chests for now. Or, you can check a Bestiary and see if you have access to certain enemies that either drop them (or maybe they have Ethers to steal). Ethers will become available to buy later on in the game, but I don't think it's until the very last areas are open. So you had best conserve those bad boys.

these Espers.. will i come across them on the board then?

and yes.. poo for the Ethers, i guess at this level im at, i cant get them.. sounded tho that later on in the game i might be able to?

lol.. I used them all up on that STUPID snake in the mines! all i got was a snake skin (worth keeping?).. so i went to the techniques store, and there was one for ether (well, raising MP anyway), but if you fail your owns MP goes to zero.. i thought it was worth buying ..just in case things went tits up.

You must be talking about Charge. It's not a bad Technick; just risky. If you want to save Ethers, just make sure you're properly leveled for boss encounters, and always go in completely full with MP/HP. That shouldn't be too hard, because a Save Point is almost always directly before the boss. Just keep your MP for healing and maybe dealing some Black Magic damage early on with one character (perhaps a dedicated mage), and keep one or two characters with full MP so you can unleash a Quickening near the end to finish him off. That's usually how I approached boss battles.

As for the Espers, they appear on invisible spaces on the License Board but only AFTER you've found and defeated them. You'll come across a few as the game progresses (Belias is part of the plot, for example), but you have to find most of them on your own. The last three (Chaos, Ultima, and Zodiark) can be outrageously difficult - especially Ultima and Zodiark - just because it's exceedingly tough to reach them. But like I said, I was none too pleased with the Espers in this game. For all the effort you have to go to in order to take them down, your return on investment pretty much sucked. I got them all, and only the last two were even remotely useful, and by then, I was facing the optional bosses where no Esper could help me. But if you're a completionist, you're gonna want them all...

Woah, I just went into the Leviathan Dreadnaught at level 11, went up to rescue someone *cough*, and then I kept getting owned, because the place is more or less in perpetual alarm state. I played smarter last time (for about 2 hours), got to a boss, who then proceeded to pwn me (although he had about 25% health when my party was wiped out).

I don't do this too often, so I go to gamefaqs to see if I may have missed something and what's the recommended level for that area. The recommended level for the dreadnaught is 18! Any particular tips about that area? Because I'm kinda screwed to grind for a while...
