Default Hoping someone can help diagnose

So, my PS3 no longer plays Blu-ray games or movies. It still plays DVDs, PS2, and PS1 games. I can literally do anything that isn't blu-ray. I'm not a PS3 expert but I think my Blu-ray player has crapped out, but then again I don't understand how it reads all other types of discs. I can still save memory cards and other things on my Hard Drive so it likely isn't that. I don't remember the name of the error but I tried to fix it the way I was told, which of course did not work.

Basically, every once in a while I'll put in a game/movie for about 5 minutes until it freezes up and I get this error. I'm kind of wanting to fix it myself because $150 is retarded. Is there anyone out there who knows enough about the architecture of the PS3 to understand why a blu-ray player won't play blu-rays but it will play DVD format discs without a hitch? It doesn't make much sense to me. If it was a hard drive issue I'd say it would still be able to play the movies, if it was a blu-ray drive issue it shouldn't be able to play anything. Sort of leaves me stumped.

BTW: 80010514. And I've tried the traditional fix a couple times, hasn't worked.

i got this info from..... psthreeblog.co.za

Start with having the system in standby (redlight is on)
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Press and hold the power button again and keep holding, it will beep as it turns on and then it will double beep. When you hear the double beeps immediately take your finger off the power button (if your system turns off before you get a double beep just try again and hold the button, it should double beep the 2nd time you try)
4. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
You will now have a screen with these options (I have attached a picture of this screen below)
1. Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
2. Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
CHOOSE THIS ONE 3.Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
4. Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
5. Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
6. System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System

Hope it works for you...if you tryed all that above i dunno...but let me know how it goes good luck.

This happened to me about a year ago, and I couldn't get anything I found on the internet to fix it, short of opening up the system myself and replacing the Blu-Ray drive which I'm sure would have fixed the problem, but not having much familiarity with the inside of the PS3 I didn't want to do it. I paid the $150 to get it fixed and it worked fine after I got it back until about a month ago when it stopped reading all discs, nothing would play. I tried to see if I could get it fixed for free but Sony said no to that, so I'm waiting until the new PS3 Slim comes out and I'm just going to buy a new one instead of spending another $150 to fix it. Also, I don't know if that information the poster above me gave is correct, because I tried that and whenever you hold the power button down like that when turning the system on you don't get any options like he said, I think it just restores the default settings and that's it. Perhaps you could do that with some older firmware version but I don't think you can anymore.

It seems to me that the blu ray laser that reads the blu rays is busted. So you should demand a fix for free since this is not suppose to happen under normal daily use. Just use the 10 year lifetime cycle against Sony and demand free service.

If they claim that PS3 is a 10 year product they should stand behind their statement even if hardware fails.

I wish it worked that way blinkboy, but I'm out of warranty. And Dgo8 That fix you showed me is the traditional fix I mentioned.

As for DSO8515, it does work, maybe you aren't doing it right? Always worked for me. I've done it multiple times.

The worst part is, honest to god, I don't use my PS3 much. Probably less than I've ever used any other console in my entire life, so I'm pretty pissed about the whole thing. And the worst thing is, this dirty little secret is apparently running pretty rampant through a lot of the older models.
