Default Reader Submissions Thread

Okay, so here we go. Every once in a while, I'll pop in here and ask to see if our readers want to write something on a specific topic. If I see something I like - and it holds to the normal writing standards of PSXE - than I'll post it up on the front page. Hopefully, this will prompt more crossover between the Commenters and forumites (which we're already getting), and further get everyone involved in the community.

So here's the first, and I'll make it simple: make your case for the PS3 and why a consumer should choose it over the competition. Bear in mind that we won't be accepting any submissions that include insults or system bashing or any fanboy behavior of any kind. It has to be as objective as possible.

Also, don't go crazy with the length. Again, keep it to about the same length as most of our editorials and features. Post your submissions in this thread right here so everyone can read them - at the very least, people will see what you wrote here in the forums - and I'll pick the winner in a few weeks. Have fun!

I see no-one has done this yet, so I will give it a fair shot.

Why anyone should pick the Playstation 3 over the competition

So the big question amongst people wishing to buy a next-gen console: which one?
Well, of course there is the Wii, the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. All have their merits, and their downsides. However, there are more things going for the PS3 than any other console, and I intend to sell them to you.

The majority of people buying a gaming console will primarily be doing so for the games. And what a feast we have on the PS3. Currently, there are 443 games released or announced so far, and this number is surely to grow. Many of these games are multiplatform, but this does not decrease their value as amazing games. What really pushes the PS3 ahead of the competition are the exclusives. Some of the most memorable games this generation have been exclusive to the PS3, and these include Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Resitance and Resistance 2, Killzone 2, Ratchet and Clank series, Heavenly Sword, LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid 4 and the upcoming God Of War III, Gran Turismo 5, White Knight Chronicles, MAG, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and many more! With so many great titles to choose from you would be crazy to give it a miss.

For the techno wizard, there are many other gadgets and trinkets to play with. For those who already own a PSP, there is the remote play feature, which enables you to interact with your PSP through the PS3. There is also extensive media playback, including mp3, mp4, DivX and wma files, and the photo album creator. Playstation Life is a two-fold operation. Folding@Home uses the massive processing power of the PS3 to help solve protein structures, which could help in developing cures for diseases and conditions. However, Life gives you the option of scouring the globe for local weather updates, and news headlines. Also, available in Europe, is PlayTV. This is a freeview box for the PS3, which enables you to watch and record two separate programs at the same time. Very handy! Wait, did I not mention the media server utility? There is a media server utility, that enables you to access your media server on your computer, and stream data to your PS3.

By far the coolest feature is the Playstation Network! This is all your online gaming and other internet services rolled into one. All games with online functions harness the PSN, for multiplayer action, or for updates and patches. The best bit about it? It is free!

Alongside this is the Playstation Store and Playstation Home. The Playstation store is where you can find all your downloadable content for your games, as well as complete games too. These include Tekken 5 Online, Wipeout HD, Burnout Paradise and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. There are also many budget games which are addictively fun, and amazing in their own rights, including the recent hits Flower, the Pixeljunk series, Pain, Flow and many many more. Aside from games, there are movies and TV shows, trailers for games and movies, wallpapers and themes for customising your PS3, PSP content, game soundtracks and Sony news features Qore and Pulse.

Playstation Home is an added bonus for those that want to be sociable online. Home is a simulation where you create your own avatar, and gallavant around a world filled with gaming delights. You can play bowling, pool and arcade games, as well as interact with other players, and even go on Treasure Hunts! There are also areas dedicated to specific games, such as Uncharted and Far Cry. For those with extra cash, you can even buy new clothes or furniture for your apartment. Sweet. The PSN has come a long since it's inception, and will continue to grow throughout this generation and next. There is also a brillaint internet browser, compatiable with youtube!

So, all in all, the Playstation 3 is a very powerful console, which developers are only just beginning to understand and harness. It provides all the 1080p HD gaming you could ever need, as well as acting as a media hub for all of your music, video and pictures. All for the neat price of $399! Do you need any more convincing? I sure didn't, when I bought my PS3.

Good pitch Robinhood, hey Ben sorry to go on an aside already but you originally talked about letting us pick a topic, will you be looking at those too or should we just stick to your topic?

For now, I'm just sticking to this topic. But feel free to post up whatever you've written; I'll consider it after we pick a winner for this current topic.

Hey I wasn't raggin on you dude, was a compliment, now I just need to come up with something on this topic. I might as well post the one I already wrote before it suddenly becomes obsolete. I'll put it up below.

Default To PS3 or Not to PS3..

So you've finally decided it's time to take the plunge. You're ready to step up to the plate and buy the latest generation of gaming console. Congratulations! But, before you dash off to your nearest store with reckless abandon you have to ask yourself, which one do you get? Unless you're one of the few that aren't worried about money in these economic times, chances are you can only afford one system. So which one? What are your options? Well you've got 3 to chose from.

Nintendo's Wii has come out of the box swinging (literally) with their new motion sensor controllers, allowing you to game in front of your TV, turning your living room into you're own personal gym/fitness center. This immensely popular system is great if you're looking for a kinder, gentler gaming experience or you think you need to lose a few extra pounds without leaving the comfort of you living room.

However, if you're comfortable with your weight or are looking for a system that offers more in the way of High Definition gaming, then you're probably looking at one of the two remaining systems.

Enter Microsoft and it's second installment to the console wars, the Xbox 360. Though plagued early on with reliability issues, the 360 has come through as a popular next gen console with solid games and the HD graphics to help back it up. For a small yearly fee you can even enjoy online gaming with your favorite games and your friends.

So, can it get any better? Do you need to look any further? Are you still asking for more out of your hard earned cash? Then let me introduce you to the final contender.

Sony comes to the party a little late with the release of it`s Playstation 3, a machine that has many people rethinking what a gaming console is. With an ever growing library of great games exclusive to the system, built in Blu-Ray disc drive and free online gaming being only a few of the options available, if it's bang for your buck you're looking for then your search is over. Instead of designing a simple console that you can play games on, Sony has created a multimedia entertainment computer, one that you and your friends and family can enjoy for years to come.

So wether you're a casual gamer or into hours of online frag fests, the PS3 is the system that has something for everyone right out of the box. The only problem is, that once everyone around you sees how great this system is, you might want to think of getting two just so you can keep one for yourself.

How aware are PS3 owners and prospective buyers?

With sales of the PS3 hovering right around 22-24 Million units one would hope that owners of this expensive piece of technology are gung-ho about learning what it has to offer. PSN is free, and yet the most recent tally of 20 million sign-ups indeed takes into account multiples that people have on their system and sign ups over the internet from PCs. What this ultimately leads to is a great deal of PS3 owners who don't have access to the latest news, demos, and content for their system. But that is just the tip of the iceberg.

The other day I was scanning the comments on an article concerning Killzone 2 and the future of the PS3 and was somewhat alarmed to read someone saying something to the effect of: "If Sony keeps it up they could eventually become a contender, I mean the games are finally starting to come along." Needless to say I had to suppress an urge to sign up to this site and list for this person all the must-have software for the PS3 as proof it isn't just "coming along." I did get the impression by the rest of the comment that he or she wasn't well informed.

Now, we all have a beef with Sony's advertising department but for arguments sake let's briefly run through some of what has people in an uproar. I have never once seen a television advertisement that mentions that the PSN is free. One would think that the contrast between a free service and a paid service would be pointed out at every
opportunity. Sony continually allows it's game box on multi-plat titles to be very much
obscured, not to mention the allowance of a proliferation of ads that are clearly meant to make it appear that every game (Resident Evil 5 being the latest) is actually only available on 360. And of course the almost complete and total lack of ads in general. We were supposed to see a massive push for Killzone 2 and I never saw one poster or a magazine ad outside of a publication for people who already owned the system and planned on buying it anyway. I heard there were 3 different commercials but I only witnessed one of them, and while it was good, I didn't see it very often. I saw nothing for the sleeper hit Valkyria Chronicles, which frankly could have used a push. Maybe that was up to Sega, but it would also have been in Sony's best interest as it is exclusive.

You might say, "Well word of mouth is a powerful thing," or "The internet is saturated with game information, people have GOT to be aware of what PS3 has to offer both in hardware and software." The thing is, even hardcore gamers are busy and not everyone is like many of us in this community who check up on the news every day or follow upcoming games from announcement to release. In fact, I've been gaming for over 20 years and didn't really bother surfing the net for gaming news until recently. I would wager that most people either just buy what looks totally awesome to them or when they see a TV commercial they jump online and read reviews to decide. And we all know how responsible reviews have begun the downward spiral on some sites.

Now I am aware that not all Gamestop locations or employees are anti-PS3 but I think most of us can agree that a heck of a lot of them are. You are probably more likely to actually recieve a spiel about why you should get a different system when you are in fact in there asking questions about the PS3 or its games. These have been known to include flat out lies about such things as capabilites and game availability. The bottom line is asking about the features of the PS3 at a chain store might not net you the information you seek.

So in the end, for these reasons and more, what you need to do is say to yourself If I didn't surf the net all the time for news and info on PS3 projects, features, and games, would I even be aware of much of what was going on with it at all? My bet is your answer at the very least is "Not as aware as I would be with the competition."

So how about it Sony? Your software may speak for itself, your online service may be free, and your hardware may be superior, but how far can that go if nobody is aware of it?

So World, this is why we never meet up on Killzone 2..lol, we're too busy with the thoughts that keep us awake at night...

Nicely written article from both of you. Looks like Ben is going to have some reading to do in the next few weeks if this keeps up.
