I am curious as to how other people view reviews. I, for one, have not read any review in the last few years on my own about any game I eventually bought. The only time I do read them is when they fall under public scrutiny and I want to form my own opinion.
At first I didn't think they were that big of deal seeing as I tend to play games that don't exactly get "good" reviews. Now though I wonder if anyone feels the same as I do or if anyone feels they are neccesary to a games success. I have lately gone and read some past reviews on past games from PSXE and while I do believe they were fair and did a good job reviewing them, I don't feel anything they could have said would have changed my mind on buying a game or not. It's just not how I roll.

I do rely on them quite a bit these days, once upon a time I would ignore them and just say the hell with what anyone else says, I want this or that game. But now with 60 bucks on the line I'd like an honest and objective look at the game's features. That's how I manage to keep from making bad decisions.
Still though, they aren't the be all end all and they might even screw you up. PSXE just reviewed Afro Samurai and I think it they were overly critical of it to be honest, so there's something to be said for rentals and then just reviewing the game in your own head as to whether or not it's worth the buy.

I just read the review of Afro Samurai and I wish I could weigh in but my ps3 died shortly after I put my copy of Afro Samurai in the damn thing.

I read reviews just to see what is said about it and then I will try to play the demo if available. I then go into my local Game shop and ask the people serving if they have played it or not. They generally tell me if it is rubbish or whatever and then I make my decision.
For the likes of KZ2 I know im buying it but still read the review anyway as it tells you etc about the sound and controls and how responsive etc they are. |

Yeah playing demos have certainly had an adverse effect on my purchases in the past. Occasionally a demo will change my mind, Killzome for example, the demo has certainly hurt my opinion of it. Though I think it is only because of what I am used to playing as opposed to being anything wrong with the game.
The FF12 demo too, it sort of turned me off in the beginning, it was just different and I wasn't sure I was ready for that.

I like to get facts about a game from a review, Im not looking for the reviewers opinion, the only opinion that counts for things like story, setting etc is my own, I know what I like. Ive bought some technically bad games in the past but I played them cos I like them, most of them would be Star Wars games lol

Am surprised most of you weren't relyin' on reviews at first, with me,i HEAVILY rely on reviews before any purchase, reviews DO matter to me a lot.Though sometimes these reviews aren't always right.I thought PoP would be great after seein 9's from both psx & ign among others,i bought it,played it and felt nothin' but absolute BOREDOM,reviews might not always be right but they are USUALLY right. |

I'd say yes and no. If the game is a horror game, I'll get it regardless of all the horrible reviews in the world. I'm a horror whore.
But if it's anything else, I'll read reviews and form an opinion. Usually I can tell if I'll like a game by looking at gameplay videos, I can already tell inFamous is a Day One buy regardless of reviews. I love the way the game looks and there seems to be a leveling aspect to it that I haven't read much about. Just the way the person playing was moving around, the controls look very fluid and fun. |

In a world where 85% of game coverage is for games that haven't been released yet, one can usually guess the review scores of most games weeks prior to their release. Game reviews have pretty much been relegated to small post-mortem opinion pieces for anyone who actively reads previews.

I haven't even read reviews, outside of curiosity on hyped titles, in probably 7 or 8 years. I've gotten to the point where I know what I like, and it's easy enough to view screenshots, videos, and play through demos to figure out if I want a game or not.
