Question Hey Sunburn man.

I remember we had this polite discusion on how your position was that dvd was all thats needed and that there was no need for the storage capacity that bluray offered.

I was wondering what your view is now that Games Developers are flatout saying that DVd is way too small.

Thank you.

Rockstar: Xbox 360 DVD Too Small, Fitting GTAIV a Problem

Overtime, more and more publishers and developers have come out to vindicate Sony's decision in using Blu-ray media as the primary medium for the PlayStation 3. Earlier on, skeptics told Sony that Blu-ray was pointless, that it only drove up the cost of the PS3, and that DVD storage was enough. As time has gone by, those skeptics have been proven wrong time and time again. Dan Houser has made perhaps the most important critique and justification of Sony's decision to use Blu-ray.

c'mon RB, you know better than this.

no need to drag up these sort of conversations in this way, as the way you have posted this is pretty rhetorical.

Truth is I wanted to PM Mr. Sunburn but I either forgot what button it was or am just too tired to remember what was posted in the original thread and wanted to ropen the discussion as it was fun.

Sorry if I made you mad and truth be told I am too wasted to re-edit my post so that it makes sense without sounding like the wasted jerk that I am at the moment, so please can you re-edit my post so that I sound less arrogant?

I was celebrating something but by now I have no idea what it was and I hope that MS wordcheck is making my post at least readable without too many errors well I am off to finish the bottle and tomorrow or maybe later depending on the hangover I will redo the post or title or both or ehmmm I was posting something but its gone ummm its nap timeeeeee

lol, im not mad, its just that people get in to arguments over the slightest of things then people get banned for these sort of topics snowballing in to an avalanche.

i just dont want it to get out of hand. it may not even be you, but what will happen is that people will chip in and things get said and yadda yadda.. you know what happens next.

PM is the best way forward for these sort of things. thats why I knew you knew better, because you seem like a nice guy

anyway, finish that bottle, and crash out... its 07.45 here in Blighty! lol

I remember it yes, but your memories seem to be a bit blurry, or like your Bluray fantatics brethren, you don't quite understand my point of view, or don't want to understand it because I'm not 100% behind the tech.

So let me reiterate my position briefly. I didn't say that DVD was all that's needed. It's good enough for games where disk-swapping is acceptable (see RPGs, some action games). However, I've always claimed that the 360's solution was inadequate for open-ended games (where disk-swapping would be extremely detrimental), and I've always claimed that the PS3's solution was not necessary because there were cheaper ways around the storage problems with existing parts (see PC games that look much better than any 360/ps3 games fitting on a single DVD). Of course, that would require mandatory installs. That's a cheaper storage solution. So is disk-swapping.

Also, where did Sam Houser, a developper of open-ended games, justify bluray at all in this interview? He didn't. He's only said that MS will need to develop a better storage solution in the future for the 360, which anyone could have seen coming (and which I've always argued for open-ended games). I personally expected to see a mandatory hard drive and install for the 360 version of GTA4. But that'll probably wait until the next GTA.

Nowhere did he mention of an improved optical storage was the solution. He's only saying that the 360's solution is inadequate, as a developer of open-ended game, and that MS has to get their act together. I've can't disagree. Maybe if you read the interview instead of the headline, it would've allowed you to think a bit and not make assumptions such as this one:

By releasing GTA 4 on a DVD disk, indeed.

So basically, it doesn't change my position at all. It in fact enforces it.

Yours truly,
Sunburnman

"On PS3, you've got a guarantee that every machine is going to have a hard-drive and, with Blu-ray, you've got plenty of storage," said Rockstar creative VP Dan Houser. "

Was that single out of context quote supposed to be a rebuttal to my argument?

First of, that quote is not from the same interview. That quote is not an endorsement of the Blu-Ray technology. That quote is again taken out of context. The original interview dealt with the 360's varying different SKUs having different storage solutions and how it caused them grief, and how the ps3's consistent story is superior to an inconsistent one (which is true). Back then he also went on the record to state that the ps3 version was behind. That makes sense, it was a product in development and it had just been delayed.

The thing is alot of things changed since then. He's come up in the newer interview that both hardware manufacturers stepped up to the game to make GTA4 better on both platforms. And I'm sure MS stepped up concerning that problem, as I'm sure that Sony stepped up for optimisations. We all win (unless we own only a Wii).

I'm not going to waste more time on childish evangelism and selective reading.

Being drunk is not an excuse for being an ass, or for being incomprehensible on the forums.
