as for defending the install, lol.. im just saying get on with it. I personally cant actually do anything about it. therefore i live with it.

I could however vow never to play the PS3 games that require installs ever again and throw away all that i own.

but that would be stupid.

So seeing as I have no power over game developers like Polyphony, Ubisoft, R*, Activision and many others who have decided to take advantage of Sonys HDD, I will carry on because i really dont want to miss out on these great games.

my personal view is that i am dissapointed that so many are making these installs mandatory, and that eventually i will have to upgrade my PS3's HDD in order to do it, but its a low cost and when i get around to doing it it will be worth it.

But the HDD space, the time it takes and the games it affects really doesnt bother me in the slightest.

it seeme to annoy other people more.

it seems foolish to ridicule something like this, especially if you are the main competition, and in a position of trust and decorum.
Because no one seriously sits back and says "you know, MS are right!! that five min install is a bloody joke, im so glad i can steal 12 cars in the time it takes to get those suckers started"

..the only ones who seriously think that are misguided fanboy kids, and if thats who Microsoft have doing public relations for them, then the future is certainly looking good for Microsoft.

of course i dont believe it is the way MS are headed, I know it was some lone PR agent who took it upon himself to write to these gaming sites and express his opinion, but it wasnt very clever was it?
The problem is that it's NOT taking advantage of the HDD, you're not effectively reducing load times at all; the DMC load times are about a second shorter on PS3. After a FIVE GIG install. The reason these companies are forcing installs on you is because their code isn't optimized for Blu Ray, which would be understandable if we were talking only about third party multiplat games, but even Sony developers are forcing installs.

That's sloppy and lazy and indicative of the many reasons why I'm simply not ready to spring money for a PS3 yet, or even when MGS4 comes out.

If I was MS I'd be ridiculing that sort of crap, too.

thats a fair point, but to be really fair we have to say that the knowledge of the architecture of the 360 is far far greater than that of the PS3 among other developers.

so many more developers are seemingly coping with building games on the PS3 using the HDD as a way of getting around certain problems.

Why is Polyphony is using the install?, we cant compare that like for like on the 360 as GT5p will never come out on the Xbox, so we cant say if Polyphony knows the PS3 better than do say R* or Capcom, but we can only hope they do and that maybe the install for GT5p is actually necessary.

Again I agree that mandatory installs are not the way forward, and I believe that this time next year its quite possible we will see less games needing installs than now, just because programers will have a deeper understanding of how the PS3 works, and will not need to go down that road unless they have to.

a year ago we were getting shit ports, now they are starting to make the games first on the PS3.. even now credited publishers, critics, programers and developers are praising the PS3 and the future it holds.

But unfortunatly the facts remain the same, installs are the way the games are on the ps3 for now.. yes too many are doing it, but they wont stop unless they find another way round, and im sure they will.

some say that the whole BRD thing is rubbish too.. and that Hideo filled up 50gigs of MGS4 and he STILL isnt happy!! but i will bet you any money that in 2 years time if you spoke to Hideo and asked him how much of a standard BRD could he fill with the old MGS4, i bet it wouldnt be 50gigs anymore.
My point being as they learn how to use the technology they will get better at it.. ala PS2 first year Vs now. you know like Timesplitters 1, SSX and TombRaider Vs GOW2, SotC, GT4 etc etc ...

im willing to wait for that. because without sounding too much like a fanboy, if the games will be as good as they were/are in the later life of the PS2 as when it first came out, then my time will be well spent.

For MS to ridicule this, it isnt really a pop at Sony and the PS3 is it?

Its a pop at R* for not being able to make a game without an install on the PS3. other people have, why not them?
but unless we can put the two GTA4's side by side.. maybe (just maybe) there is a difference between the two due to this install?

Its Embarressing that this guy even works for someone like MS.. I know you said that you would of said the same thing, but if I was MS I know I would of had him in my office the very next day explaining himself, not patting him on the back.

the key thing here are.. do the PS3 owners care? and to be honest the only people who really seem to care about this are people who dont own a PS3.

not this shit again
i don't like these attitudes in the gaming industry either. They happen everywhere, and many are guilty of it, and the only way we'll ever get close to getting rid of them is to not report them.

As I've stated, I really don't care about installs, although I definately believe it should be optional. I find it hard to believe that while there plenty of games that don't require installs and work fine, some are mandatory.

Personally, since I own both the PS3 and 360, for me it comes down to a matter of stability vs online functions. I've made a point that any multiplatform offline games I'm getting on the PS3 without question. That leaves multiplayer games to the 360, which has imo, a superior online setup, and face it... LIVE! although it costs $50USD/year it's alot better than Sony's PSN. There's more updates on LIVE!, more going on... PSN, you wait till Thursday and hope against the odds that maybe you'll get the same extras the 360 received.

Which brings me to GTA4, should I decide to buy the game, which I still am not sure about. The DLC means nothing to me. The install means absolutely nothing to me. What does matter to me is, am I playing offline or online, and am I playing on a system that is known for stability or a system known for being the worst built system in history? I have 3 friends on my PSN list... All 3 are from Final Fantasy XI. One of them is a 360 fanboy from the UK whom by the sheer luck of whatever, I convinced him to get a PS3. He still has no games for it. On the other side, LIVE! I have 18 people on my list, 6 of them are from Final Fantasy XI (one of them mentioned above)... The other 12 I met playing Halo 3. I'm pretty sure MOST of them will be playing GTAIV. I'm leaning in the 360 direction for that reason. I know more people on LIVE!, and it's just better for meeting random people to have on the list. PS3 feel more like a special kids club online.

Microsoft PRs shouldn't be poking at Sony for it's 5 minute install, they should be poking at Sony for it's unfunctional lack of features crappy online network. Now further hindered by the roflmao-delay of HOME, which keeps Sony on the back burner for their online features. Honestly, the moment they finally put that out, I seriously feel LIVE! will be shaking in it's boots. Microsoft should also be poking at Sony lack of ingame XMB. Custom soundtracks? Ability to access friendlist, messages, etc.

If I were Gates, I'd personally fire the guy myself just so he knew what huge mistake that was to go to the public with such a low grade blow and so little impact behind it.

So again, as somebody who owns both, that install is unimportant. Nor is the DLC for that matter, although for many it will play a very big role I'm sure. People want content, the 360 has more and seems it always will as things stand. Microsoft employees are probably drinking Starbucks on the way to work, Sony is... Well... Their triple shot mocha no whip latte is currently delayed.
