For wasting our money just to state what gamers have been saying all along. I could have made the same recommendations and I'd have done it for free!
The (undoubtedly) expensive government commissioned report on game ratings written by the overrated Tanya Byron recommends that the BBFC ratings be combined with the PEGI ratings system giving the following for games: 3+, 7+, 12+, 15+ and finally 18+. No s**t Sherlock! If there is one good thing to come out of this it is that she does have some degree of popularity so the powers that be may actually pull their finger out and do something constructive for once. She makes the following interesting comment I hope anti-games protesters take note of: "the arousal brought on during some game play may have the same impact on children as high levels as stress," although "there is no clear evidence of desensitization in children." I also picked up on the comments regarding state intervention (ie banning) while there is still uncertainty regarding the classifications which I take to mean that once these new measures are in force and being taken as seriously asmovie ratings then there will be much less need for censorship in games like Manhunt. This would be a successful outcome for many gamers who like to play the more mature titles currently being put through the wringer.
