Sony Discusses BluRay with Microsoft.

Lol.. I never thought this day would come. But looks like Sony might make money off the Xbox and future Xbox’s.. im amazed.

"The Financial Times is reporting today that Stan Glasgow, President of Sony Electronics, has stated that there have been discussions with Microsoft to incorporate a Blu-ray drive into the Xbox 360. After the death of HD-DVD Microsoft announced that they would be discontinuing the HD-DVD add-on, leading on to discussions between Microsoft and Sony regarding the possibilities of a Blu-ray add-on, or even a fully integrated drive for future SKUs. The result of this would be an increased price point for the Xbox 360, along with a portion of all hardware revenue going to Sony. Yes, that means Sony would be making money off of every 360 and PS3 sold.

Of course, Microsoft are being coy about this entire thing, stating that they have "made no such announcement. I didn’t realise Sony owned that much in BluRay, enough to be in talks with MS… still, im glad MS are at least talking about it, only a fool would bury their heads on such a matter.

Interesting. I don't see an integrated release for the 360 but maybe the follow on console in a few years time.

If anything I'd expect a Blu-Ray plug in device to allow the 360 BR movie capabilities.

I thought Sony jsut about created Blu-Ray?

June 12th = MGS4 bundle = I get into the HI-Def format. Anything MS releases for the 360 as a blu add-on I won't get. I almost got the HD-DVD add-on and lucky I waited until the war was over lol.

It's a consorsium. Sony is the instigator, but the consorsium made of multiple companies defined the specs, and theoretically speaking, control Blu-Ray.

I'm thinking Sony's trying to get on board because microsoft would be a big piece of the pie (as it would mean improved support for windows machines, as well as 360 support for BR).

I can see that Sony could be angling for full video capabilities on the PS3 as part of any upcoming deal. We shouldn't still be having problems with unsupported video file formats.

Having Mircosoft utilising BR should help ensure it really will replace DVD in the future.

i agree, not only will sony make money for helping MS, but we the PS3 owner could see more MS friendly stuff on the PS3, might not be a bad thing!

Im all for MS having BRD, but i feel that its a little late in the day for the 360, maybe they should concentrate on making the XboX361 (lol) with BRD and a HDD. Buying an Add-on can only hurt the 360 in the long run. unless less its a free piece if hardware, which i cant see hapening.

if its true what Ryan was saying about the 360 needing five dvd's to run MGS4 (and were not even getting in to the argument if the current 360 hardware could run MGS4).. then more and more games over the next few years will need extra space. this time next year we could see duel/ triple layered BRD. I really wouldnt be surprised if MS have already designed a new console.

If it comes - expect it to be for movie playback only. It would segment the market way too much if they used it for games as well, and it would be a bigger mistake than having a HDD model and a HDD-less model.

Sunny is right. If I had just my 360 and games started being released on BR for those with the add-on or the new model 360 (delete as applicable) I would be pretty miffed. Don't get me started on the HD and HD-less debacle

Well.. I don’t know what to say, apart from I feel that MS could be making a mistake if this is true. But im sure they know what they’re doing!! After all, to lose the console war once already to a less powerful machine in terms of hardware, the last thing they would want is to lose the next gen war to a console that came out a year after their one. On that basis alone im sure they have something up their sleeve.
