I have taken this from Gamefaq's.. its basically correct and is everything i wanted to say on the subject.
and i know all you guys know about this already... and i will be asking questions at the end... "Microsoft payed an advance for 2 downloadable content packs, 25 million apiece, based on speculated profits. These packs will be sizable PS3 will not being seeing this content for at least a YEAR. Microsoft expects of at least 70 million PROFIT. Take Two and Microsoft are looking forward to this and are extremely confident Even if they don't make back their money (50 million), Take Two has to return the difference advance. Thus, Microsoft doesn't lose a DIME. Microsoft getting two birds with one stone, they will gain money from the downloadable contents and they will make poeple who are planinig to buy a console prefere there console. means gain more money Microsoft paid a reported $50 million advance to secure exclusive Grand Theft Auto IV downloadable content for Xbox 360. Next-Gen spoke with Microsoft and analyst Michael Pachter about the deal. Stock analysis site Seeking Alpha reports (via NeoGaf) that that Microsoft will be forking over a a $50 million advance to GTA IV publisher Take-Two in order to secure exclusive GTA IV downloadable content. Speaking to Evan Wilson of Pacific Crest Securities, newly-appointed Take-Two CFO Laine Goldstein said in a recent earnings call that the first batch of downloadable content should be available in March 2008 followed by another episodic download later in the year. "The first $25 million is for the first episodic content package that's supposed to go out and that is in March of '08. That's why it moved into current because it's in the next 12 months. The second $25 million will be for the second episode, and that will be later in fiscal '08," Goldstein said. Next-Gen contacted Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter, who further explained the deal. "What Microsoft did was pay a $50 million advance," he said, much in the same way a big-name author receives a payment in advance of his or her next book. In other words, he said, the $50 million is not a fee that Microsoft paid Take-Two solely to secure the rights for the content. Rather, Microsoft is confident that Take-Two's portion of the revenue generated by GTA IV content downloads will surpass the $50 million advance paid. "Microsoft basically said that it's happy to pay [Take-Two] in advance $50 million in revenue that [Take-Two] is going to receive from GTA IV downloads," he said. Microsoft takes about a 30 percent cut from Xbox Live Marketplace content sales, according to Pachter. Taking that 70/30 split (publisher/Microsoft) and the $50 million advance into account, Microsoft is apparently confident that GTA IV download revenues over Xbox Live will be at least $70 million. If revenues don't meet that figure, Take-Two will have to return some of the advance, according to Pachter. But he said that there's no reason to believe Take-Two would actually miss that revenue target. He also stated, "By giving this advance, Microsoft did extract from Take-Two the promise to make [GTA IV content] exclusive. But there will not be any downloadable content for PS3, at least for some time. My guess is at least for a year." so, if you didnt know that ..how do you feel? is it bad that M$ have done this yet again? or how would you feel if Sony had done this? how i feel... I think it fk*g stinks! we shouldnt be in a console war... its stupid, but as long as theres a company like M$ who are willing to screw over another console for a cheap thrill, well there will always be a war. am i pissed off with Sony, no.. in fact i will stand by my PS3 and not worry one iota. mainly being that the PS3 version will get content.. the main reason im rather upset by this is because GTA IS a Playstation game first, if it wasnt us guys who brought GTA1 through to GTA: SA then R* wouldnt have a game to sell.. ok, it is on Xbox.. but i would say at least 80% of sales in total come from the Playstation gamers. now to cut out PS Gamers for 50 big ones i think is a huge huge mistake.. I know how GTA3, VC and SA were good enough to buy a PS2 for, I dont think that GTA4 is good enough to buy a 360 for! and i think that Take Two/R* have made one hell of an error here.. personally i like to think that Take Two/ R* hasnt screwed over its loyal PS fans and that something good will come our way. but i cant help feeling that its a grave mistake, and one that they may well pay for in the future. as I for one feel that i have lost that shine over GTA4 rather quickly, and if the PS3 verion is amazingly good and the 360 version isnt so hot, then I hope they choke on their 50 million. humph! lol PS.. if we do get content and it is in 2009... there will most likely be another GTA coming out.. so whats the bloody point!?!

First of all, it depends on what's in those content packs. If it's a couple of costume changes, nobody will care in the slightest. If it's all new missions or something, that's a bigger deal. Secondly, I have doubts the Network won't see ANY downloadable GTA IV content for a year. It may not get THAT content, specifically, but who's to say the Network doesn't get their own content?
As I understand this, that specific content (those 2 packs, for which Microsoft paid for) are timed exclusives. That does NOT mean Rockstar/Take-Two can't produce other content for the Network. I don't think people are fully grasping this; the agreement makes no mention of forbidding the publisher to release extra downloadable content for the PlayStation Store. These guys want to make both versions of this game as popular as possible, because it's all about money. Shooting themselves in the foot by denying the PS3 version any Store content makes zero business sense. That's just my take.

Both games are getting two seperate batches of exclusive content. Microsoft is just parading it around like a fairy at a Gay Pride Parade.

it's take two saying it this time. Microsoft had nothing to do with that report (only the money that fuelled it!).

pretty much agree with you guys and have been saying exactly that over at gamefaqs.
i cant imagine less content on the ps3, that would not make sense. and even though i have said as much, gfaqs is so over run with xbox fanboys its pointless trying to get them to see. when i pointed out and asked why 50% of posts on the ps3 board were trolls, my reply got wiped cus of violation of TOS. lol anyway, glad you all think the same.... make no mistake, i wouldnt of wanted Sony to pay for the content either.

I think MS is still pissed it only got the GTA series 1 year later and is getting some payback to what Sony did with Rockstar. If I was making some good cash right now, I would have the PS3 also. It does suck for PS3 owners and I'm postive Sony and Rockstar will come out with some good content. I'm not a fan boy of MS or Sony (Shit, I was with Sony since the PS1 days only lol. I even hated the original Xbox)
Gamefaqs is shit dillon LOL |

It's not about jealousy or anything. It's about getting exclusive content. It's not new practices or anything... I don't see what the big deal is, it's how the business works.

I don't doubt it.
Provided that it's not an exclusive hat or something.
