Sorry but it's people that say that the games need it that make me laugh.
I can't say that they don't benefit from it, but needing it is not the same thing at all.

I read an interview with an independant developer who said that DVD9 was running out of space with prior gen games and so they are going to seriously have to take shortcuts if they want to fit current gen games on them.

That still doesn't argue the necessary part of my argument. Of course a developper will want blue-ray. Typically a developper wants everything possible to make his job easier, and I'm sure nothing is different in the world of games. :P
FFVII was not a worse game because it was on a multiple CDs, was it? There are alternatives to the space issue that have been considered in the past, and now with Hard-Drives, games can be downloaded or installed on the hard-drives. They might be less convenient solutions, but they are still solutions. The only kind of game I really see it hurt are GTA-like games, where DVD-swapping would completely ruin it (hence why I am super curious about GTA4' announcement today). As I said. Beneficial, but necessary? That's a long shot. To think that Sony did not have a motive into putting Blu-Ray in the ps3 besides gaming is to be completely naive.

20gb? Bleedin' 'eck, that would bve 5 DVD's wouldn't it?. It would be a real pain in the ass having to switch discs again.

Again, I'm not saying that it's not beneficial. However, to say it's a necessity now, is pretty retarded IMO, although I can see that change in 3-4 years.

How did they keep Halo 3 to 7gb, doesn't that mean the levels won't be as expansive or the textures won't be quite as intricate as they could be?
It's quite possible that R:FoM creators have just been sloppy in their usage of the media and that Bungie are shoehorning things.

Not necessarily. You're still confined with what's available in RAM. What it means is that the textures may not be as varied (as there is fewer space to store it on). And besides, I thought that the bulk of Resistance's data came from the 1080p movie files (anyone willing to take bets that H3 will have none of these?).

Reason is that they don't just countinue the game in next disc, but they have to copy some designs/textures in every single disc they have (specially character design). |
