i do agree DK.. but mine hasnt frozen since switching.

its possible however that it was the game itself that not making the console switch over from 1080 to 720?

i really cannot give you an answer.. what you are saying is 100% correct, but from a point where it was freezing for me three times, to me playing 6 hours straight and no freezing. i cant tell you if that was me running it at 720 or just not doing what ever it took to freeze the game.

but now we have the update, i might go back to 1080i (cus of CoD) and see if anything happens.

but like i say, IF (big if) it was to do with the res, then it would be because of the game not communicating the res to the PS3. which is possible, seeing at one point this game was apparently being made to run in 1080.. so its possible that there was some code left in that confused the ps3?

i really dont know, but if it was the res problem with between 720 and 1080.. that might be the possioble cause.

bizarre tho.

EDIT:

ok, weird!! i change the res to 1080i... and in the first 10 mins the game freezes!!!!

this tells me one thing for sure.. the 2.01 FW didnt solve this problem. also what is still in doubt is the whole res thing. but i did just change it from 720p to 1080i.. played ten mins and it froze...

i dont know what else to say apart from ..weird!!

That IS odd. I alway have my PS3 set to 720p and its froze 3 times over the 12 or so hours it took to beat it. I just tried it in 1080i, pressed my TVs info button and it had switched to 720p when the game loaded up, so it shouldn't interfere, but it still seems to from what you say, all I can say is ???!?!?!?!?!
I did have a theory that maybe there was nothing wrong with AC but something with the OS since 2.00 that AC didn't like and that 2.01 would not fix AC as such, but whatever was pissing AC off in the OS thus fixing it in a roundabout way, but from what you say I can forget that lol

I don’t know what’s going on.. all I know is that everyone who has reported ways of fixing it, ways that it has gone wrong, might all be telling the truth, but are all really different from each other. There MUST be some common element that connects all of this together.. but what is it????

the strangest thing is that even tho soooo many sites reviewed it badly, the game is one of the biggest sellers this year.

I think i read it on the main page here at Psxe that Ubisoft are actually putting other games back so they can bathe in the glory of AC's sale figures to come, cant be bad.

so not only cant you get a wii this Xmas, but psp and AC are limited too.. lol.

ive got UT3 for my Xmas pressie.... lol, its the first time in years that im actually looking forward to Christmas!!

I don't think many sites reviewed it "badly." It averages like 81%, I think, and we're not the only ones to give it a 9+. GameSpot and Game Informer did, too. Problem is, you have idiots like EGM bringing the average down a LOT due to absolutely inane scores like 5s and 6s.

Bottom line- if they know what they're talking about, the game scores an 8 at the bare minimum.

i agree totally with what youre saying... people forget that an AVG score is 5/10.. 50/100 etc etc. and that 8/10 is actually a very very good score.

but either because theres far too many 'great' games out there or far too many people are way to happy to give out high scores to rubbish games.. but people just wont buy or try anything unless it has a score over 90%

It seems that the days where say a spectrum game gets 10/10 because it REALLY was incredible is truly gone. but thats not a bad thing, we just have to adjust ourselves accordingly.

i remember the days where we would buy games that were 6 or 7's on the score front, because it usually meant that the game was different, or just exactly what you like. but these days unless it gets over 8.5 its not worth bothering with.. which is stupid. i like arguing over game scores, its fun! if everything was a 9 or a 10, it would be boring.

Though personally speaking AC is in the 9's for me.. others its lower. but what i was referring to was mainly the harsh words and the fact that some people just didnt even play the game for an hour, let alone go back to it after the first play.

its good that AC might sell more than some churned out EA vomit sports sim.

I really hope it does.

There has been talk before of the big gaming review sites (particularly places like IGN) effectively operating on something like a 7-10 scale these days. With most games coming from just a few big publishers they generally can't afford to absolutely trash games from the same people who spend big advertising money on their sites. As such the line between 'genuinely mediocre' and 'flawed but good' has become very blurred in the minds of readers and games at the low end of that scale (6 and 7) are seen as much worse than they would have been a decade ago. It also explains the recent trend some people have seen of more games getting very close to 10/10, 100% and the like.

I haven't had the chance to play this as much as I'd like (I've just killed the third assassination target) but so far I think it's a great game. I'd break it down like this:

The Bad:
  • The sci-fi angle isn't doing much for me. The whole "genetic memory includes actual ancestor memories" angle seems forced, and having faux technical glitches appear around enemies and objects breaks the immersion of the otherwise well-realised time period. I'm very much interested in seeing where it's going purely to see how Ubisoft justify pulling it out of that era instead of having it all take place back then.
  • Cutscenes where you can freely walk around a small area while people talk to you are still cutscenes. In fact, with the restricted movement and controls during these points they're more intrusive than a cutscene. Halo 3 had a similar annoyance, with several characters talking to you in your head by making your view go all fish-eyed, reducing your movements to a crawl and generally leaving you all but immobile while they talk. It's irritating.
  • Flag missions are dumb. The first one was fine as it had a person who didn't like Altair much set him a challenge before he'd share his information. The second one has an informant casually mention that a group of thugs stole his flags and he needs you to retrieve them. These thugs scattered them in a linear path across the rooftops that only a free runner could traverse, looping back round to the place where they stole them. Oh, and the informant only wants them back if you can fetch them in under two minutes. Again, it breaks the immersion.
  • The actual assassinations themselves have been a little disappointing so far, purely because I was hoping for at least some sort of medieval Hitman, with disguises, improvised weapons, crossbow sniping, traps and the like. So far I've just blended up to them and pressed X and was then treated to a five minute dialogue between Altair and the man he just killed, where Altair exerts his own morality on the victim while they reveal that they aren't actually as evil as he thought they were. The exception was the third target, who automatically launched a scripted event where he sends a few waves of guards then flees, and happened to run right into a group of friendly vigilantes that held him still until I was in stabbing range. The chances of the assassinations developing as I'd like seems hindered by the need to have a conversation with the victim, but I suppose this way it falls in line with the honourable type of assassinations Altair believes himself to be performing.
The Good:

  • The combat has been very enjoyable so far, despite some reviewers making a point of saying how bad it was. I've actually been deliberately provoking fights with guards because I like it so much. It's all about timing and rhythm and there's a nice flow to it.
  • The free running is very well implemented. Even though a lot of it is automatic there's still some level of skill to it, as Altair will need nudging in the right direction as he makes the jump, and the animation when climbing is well done, with Altair actually placing hands and feet in the right place. Just running around the rooftops is fun, much like the insane leaps of Crackdown.
  • The cities are great as well. I can't comment on their authenticity but they seem suitably realistic as general examples of their time period and the free running has been taken into account at all points, with an abundance of hand- and footholds to scale.
  • The dialogue has been of a fairly high standard so far, though there's been a lot of repetition in the side missions. Generally the briefings, eavesdropping and assassination conversations have all been well acted.
  • The game looks pretty darn nice in HD, with a long draw distance and large, open areas coupled decent animation and (so far) a steady framerate, though the framerate may well drop later in the game as there are supposed to be issues with it.
Overall I'm really enjoying the game and so far there's been no sign of anything that could drag it below an 80% score, even if I've already experienced all the variations of intelligence gathering and the game were to ultimately end with the story equivalent of a big slap in the face.

I bought this on boxing day and I'm loving it. I'm up to assassination number 6 now I think, or is that 7?

The save a citizen dialogue repeats can get annoying and also sometimes Altaire doesn't hide when he should which prolongs the running.

Macho is right that the fighting is great and I do sometimes hang around for it rather than running.
