Very good review. Looks worth buying.

As you say that Ubi falls slightly short of the greatness they (and we) envisioned, could this be due to them still having minor issues with PS3 development rather than the project being bigger than the PS3 is currently capable of?

The UK IGN site is certainly odd. I don't check it often because I don't like IGN but for the most part it seems to be the same site as the US one with a few additional local elements. But it also gets the Australian parts as well, for some reason, meaning you can end up with three different reviews (as with Assassin's Creed) all of which have different scores and make the site seem oddly schizophrenic.

Anyway, good review Ben. The whole twist to the story always seemed like an odd element to throw in, though I guess it's good that they seem to get it out of the way quickly rather than throwing it in at the end for a big WTF moment. Once certain previews and screenshots began hinting at a modern-day element I was half expecting the game to end with Sam Fisher waking up and going "What a strange dream!", possibly following it up with some cool, refreshing Airwaves. As it stands it seems almost like a way to avoid tying the franchise down to the time period the main game takes place in, allowing the series as whole to jump to different locations, time periods or characters while remaining under the same franchise umbrella.

Something I was wondering that hasn't been mentioned in any review I've read is about the death system, particularly when you're in the main assassinations. Can you save at will or does it use checkpoints, or even simply put you back at the start of that section? Obviously in terms of the general theme it has some similarity to the Hitman series (which I love), placing you in the target's location and letting you make your own way to him with your own approach, and it's that element that has me particularly interested in Assassin's Creed, even if it doesn't quite go as far as a general stealth game.

No, certainly not. The game actually runs slightly better on the PS3 in the first place, and besides that, the two versions are mostly identical. It was just a really ambitious project and it would've been extremely difficult for Ubisoft to recognize the fullness of its vision. They did a great job trying, though.

The saving is done automatically, although not necessarily at checkpoints. Basically, you just have to keep playing until you see the saving icon, and then you're free to just turn it off. I can't be sure, but the game might save if you "Exit Memory," but I've never actually tried it.

And if you like that aspect of games in something like Hitman, than Assassin's Creed is for you. Just remember, it's a LOT bigger than Hitman.

Thanks for that Ben, it's definitely still a game I'm interested in. Gabe of Penny Arcade has also weighed in with his opinion:

Quote:
if Assassins Creed actually was a 7.0 game I'd tell you. I also want you to know that when I tell you it's ****ing incredible I'm not bullshitting you because we're running ads for the game.

There are about four or five reviews of the game with scores in the low to mid 7's. I want to cover some of the common complaints these reviewers had in case anyone out there is worried about them...
He goes on to suggest why they might have reached that conclusion and why it probably won't affect gamers who don't have to blitz through a game to get a review up so they can move on to the next.

i got this today, and so far i have to say im very very impressed.

I said to Hannibl today that even though AC is a very unique game, that it reminded me of something. a game taht wasnt the same, but i had the same feelig when i first played it... and ive just thought what that game was!

edit:
its Shadow of the Colossus... obviously it not really like it, but its the feeling i had when i entered into the world of which Ico would stand many many years later.

very cool feeling.

I think you felt that way because of the kingdom. I got the same feeling, just because it seems so vast, and you're often exploring it on horseback. Of course, there's a LOT more in AC's world, as the landscape in SotC was basically just there to support each Colossus.
