Default M$ appears on BBC's Watchdog...

seems that Microsoft were on the telly today!

...From GamesIndustry

"the programme will focus on the 'ring of death' problem, as it's been nicknamed by gamers, where three red lights appear around the console's power button and the machine stops working.
The problem appears to occur much more frequently in the first batch of Xbox 360 units produced.
In the US, Microsoft agreed to offer complimentary repairs to owners of faulty consoles manufactured before January 1, 2006 - even if their warranties had expired. The company also said it would refund customers who had already paid for repairs.
However, it would seem the deal only applies to US Xbox 360 owners. Here in the UK, as Watchdog is set to report, gamers are being asked to pay between GBP 80 and GBP 90 to have their console fixed - regardless of when it was manufactured. "

and after the program, Gamesindustry.biz updated with this...

"UPDATE: Microsoft has now told the BBC that "most people with an Xbox 360 have an outstanding experience, and there is no systemic issue". They say each incident is unique and is looked at on a case by case basis, and have given one of the consumers featured on tonight's show a replacement unit and a new game."

did anyone here see that program? i usually catch it, if im not up to much. but didnt tonight.

and who here has heard of 'The Ring Of Death'.. ?

I got it once on my 360, but it never happened afterwards. My brother had to ship his back one, and hasn't had a problem since.

It might indicate that your 360 is dead, it doesn't kill it. :P

My old roommate had this happen to his. Got it fixed for free though, so it wasn't really a huge problem.

I was wondering that. You're not paying for electricity, I gather?

I noticed you are always listed as away

I've heard of the ring. Thankfully never had it from my launch machine. It does on occassion jerk a bit through one or two movies and it has frozen twice that I can recall. Nothing more serious than that.

Certainly nothing compared to the DRE on the PS2.

I think it's complete bullsht that we aren't being treated as well as the US gamers.

heres some news from GI.biz...

"Microsoft has responded to claims by the BBC's Watchdog programme that it is charging excessive amounts for Xbox 360 repairs, stating that there is "no systemic issue" with the console.

Last night's episode of the consumer affairs show featured two gamers whose Xbox 360 units had broken after just over a year of use, and were told they would have to pay around GBP 80 to get their consoles fixed.

In an official statement issued to GamesIndustry.biz, Microsoft said that the "vast majority" of Xbox 360 owners have had an "outstanding experience" with the console.
But the platform holder went on to concede: "That being said, we have received a few isolated reports of consoles not working as expected.

"It's important to note that there is no systemic issue with Xbox 360 - each incident is unique and these customer inquiries are being handled on a case-by-case basis."
Microsoft has not revealed details of how many Xbox 360 units have been found faulty, but did state that the return rate is "significantly lower" than the CE industry average of between 3 and 5 per cent.

"Customer satisfaction is our highest priority, and we do everything we can to take care of gamers who may be having problems with their consoles," the company said.

"Anybody having an issue with their Xbox 360 console should call customer service immediately so that we can help. Microsoft voluntarily provides customers with a one year manufacturer's warranty in the UK which operates over and above the legally required retailer warranty for all consumer goods."

so.. all sorted then, ahem.
