Hi all, would just like to ask everyone their opinions on violence in video games in relation to children aged 10-15. Any and all opinions are welcome, as I am doing this as part of some research for an exam I will be doing at the end of the year. I'm going to use this to judge the scope of my project, and if I feel it's alright, I will probably post a more refined thread with a poll. But as I say, any and all opinions on aything to do with children and violent video games (opinions on age ratings, censorship, wether or not you allow/would allow your child to play certain games etc), however long, will be greatly appreciated.

It's should be completely dependent on the child's maturity. If a 12 year old is mature enough to know that this is all fantasy (as evaluated) I wouldn't necessarily stop him to play the games. If not, well, I'd definitely stop them from playing violent games.

its a weird one...

on one hand at 15 you are a year off being able to get married and start a family.. two years off being able to drink (in the UK)... 2 years away from being legally Gay (lol.. stupid eh).

in the 70's you had much more 'adult oriented themes' in cartoons.. not violence as such, but certainally more sexual references. but in this age of being 'pc' ...has things got worse? I believe they have.

I know kids of 12 who get their mums to buy GTA, yet in the states and a couple of cases in the UK (mainly in the states) the violence that is directly linked to games such as GTA, is being commited by kids under the legal age to own the game they blame for their outburst of violence.

I would say its all about sanity at the end of the day.. you can have an adult with a mind of a child who will strike another adult if they are insulted, same with kids.

theres loads of threads on this at PSXE Goten.. you should be able to find a lot of them.. hopefully. I know ive posted loads of stuff on them, and rambled and ranted for a length or two.

So would that mean you agree with the current age ratings, or that they should be looked at? Would you, personally, allow say an 11 year old play a game like Devil May Cry as long as you felt they understood that it was pure fantasy?

Personally, I agree with you there, infact that's my sentiment exactly when it comes to telling my mum and dad whether my younger brother can play certain games or not, but I need as many opinions from people like us (game players) as possible, as well non-game players, teachers, parents etc to get a decent amount of evidence to have a good arguement in my essays.

I played more violent things than DMC when I was 12, and I didn't become a freak. :P I don't think my parents were completely ok that I played games like MK, but they knew that I was mature enough to know that it wasn't real. To me, that's the perfect model, although it does require some parenting, which is too much work for some.

To me the ratings are definitely a guide, however, for those that aren't well versed in the world of games (which I'm assuming I'll grow into as years go by).

Looks like we all think along the same lines. Violent videogames only cause harm to people who are already susceptable. Adult or Child.

I think the current ratings are ok but they should be breakable if a parent wants to buy an older rated game for their child. At this point the fault for any psycotic behaviour passes to the parent or guardian.

In some ways I think the same should apply to other media.

no..i believe if the kid is mature enough to now the diffrence between virtual and reality...i think theres no harm in it....BUT he should know wat he's playing and i dont belive in those 18+ games...[example] me.I FINISHED MY O-LEVELS JUST LAST JUNE AND THEY TEACHED ME EVERYTHING FROM HOW DO THEY BRING KIDS TO THINGS LIKE they teach A 16+ ...NOW DO U THINK MY PARENTS ALSO HELPED ME IN BIOLOGY..the answer yes THEY DID ESPIECIALLY IN THAT CHAPTER OF REPRODUCTION.....i am dare enough to play gta san-andreas in front of my father and my mother and my whole family of five...AND HOW OLD AM I ~~~~~~~~~~~~12~~~~~~~~~~~ if u dont belive me ask the guys who think i am a young rat.mr.sunburn.dillionthebunny.gabriel013.psxextre me.

not that I dont believe @ps3, because he is so well read, and whites liek a gad, but I believe this should be a seperate topic, as its derailing from Gotons at such a fast pace, I cant keep up with it.


maybe Goton should take note of @PS3 in more detail.. maybe use him as a case study?
