..sting ray? lol.. see what i did there?
ahem, so Blu-Ray is out selling HD? well, we have discussed this lready, about ol Heff Vs Micky and Minnie.. but you guys with the ps3's.. are you buying films yet? and if so.. why and what are you buying? are they worth the money or the effort? I did see Xmen3 on Blu_ray playing through a HD plasma, and i was shocked on how good it looked, truely shocked. in the way that if i had £4,000 there and then, i probably would of brought them both. I always thought that Blu-Ray capasity would be used in the way that you could get all six StarWar films on to one disk, but so far that hasnt happened..

I don't have a PS3 (not until some more games come out, maybe late 2007 or even 2008) I'm not taking the jump still into Blu or HD-DVD. Since I have a 360, I could get the HD-DVD player (a techy question for the peeps, does it upscale reg dvds into a higer res?)
Since I don't own a HDTV at the moment is the main reason I'm not jumping in. Once I do get a HDTV (1080p and all the goodies such as HDMI ports and such) Imight consider it. A stand alone up converter DVD to HD might be an option (Or if the have a HD-DVD upscaler packed in) The main reason also is that many other people in the forums, I have built up a massive DVD collection and to see a new format take over is I won't buy the same DVD again to replace one I already have just to see it alittle better (Such as Total Recall, wtf, does it really look better than the re-mastered version in that sweet tin box?)When I do get a PS3, I'll only be buying games for it, not Blu movies. As a storage media, it's freaking sweet! But, since alot of companies are still getting into the door to provide dual layer DVD discs to be burned on, I'll keep my DVDs and my DVD-R+R going. lol |

I think these media will be irrelevant in 10 years at the max. Digital distribution is where it's at.
And I have an HDTV.

I don't think there's any reason to buy Blu-Ray movies unless you have HD, and I don't have HD yet. I do have the PS3, but movies are a distant second to me in terms of priority with that machine.
I just like having the PS3 because it can play both DVDs and Blu-Ray, and as far as I know, it's the ONLY Blu-Ray player that can do that right now. Maybe I'm wrong about this, but if not, it's a huge benefit, IMO. So if Blu-Ray wins, I can leisurely make the conversion while always being able to watch my old DVDs. And if HD-DVD wins, I have the 360, too. So personally, I really don't care who "wins." I wouldn't mind if both just managed to co-exist.

I really, really wanted to buy a movie when I finally picked up a PS3, but even the cheapest movies at Best Buy were around $25. Do I really want to drop 30 bux on Click? Ehhhh, no. I just rent them from NetFlix. I prefer to own my movies, but the current prices are just insane.
I've been impressed with the quality of movies like Superman and even Benchwarmers, but Lady In the Water looked no better than a normal DVD. I've got Rocky to watch this weekend, but I'd be surprised if it looks any good since it wasn't exactly a big budge flick when it was released.

On demand stuff. Devices like Ipods will probably let you bring your movies from a TV to another, etc etc...
The only reason that these disks exist is because DVD players have been a massive success, and they're at the point where the hardware sales have gone down, yet the technology for digital distribution is not quite there yet. That, and tighter DRM. My 2 cents, anyway.

Wifi has surpassed T1 speeds ages ago Felix. WiFi has speeds of up to 108mbps and higher in certain corporate and business cases.
The next step won't be necessarily WiFi downloads bur more so what i think sunburn was talking about which is Digital Media. The biggest problem with what you say Sunburn is the copyrighting issue. Though it can almost never be stopped you will notice most players won't do what you're thinking of. not unless they can offer some sort of protection. Blu-Ray, DVD's, CD's, or any type of Disc media will always exist. Or atleast for the next couple of decades. Reason for it is not necessarily movies. But more so storing information in a cheap disposable media. Since Discs can be produced on a mass production level they can be produced cheaply and effectively. I still use CD's and slowly am moving into DVD's to store information. Because the cheaper they get the less i care if the CD does get damaged or ruined. But i think your point does have a lot of merit in it sunburn, and i definitely see the future going in that direction.

Well, they'll most likely implement some sort of DRM along with that... Much like with everything else. Once it'll be locked enough for the benefit of the industry (see itunes movie store), I can see it moving towards that.
