I actually feel that the PS2 is better than the Xbox... still after all this time, I believe it.

I feel it’s down to the way the PS2 is designed with the custom chips and how it shares its processing power.
ok.. yes with the Xbox you can throw something large at it and it will solve the problem and do a good job. but certain things are only possible with the PS2's hardware..

Ports from the Xbox to PS2 never faired well, but if the Xbox was so powerful and almighty then ANYTHING that the ps2 could do then the Xbox should of been able to do it no problem, but it couldn’t.

It takes people of Hideos standard to work on the machine and get the best out of it... Hideo, Polyphony, the Ico guys, Square and even R* did some amazing work on the PS2, and more that i havent thought of.

a lot of people said that Shenmue couldnt be done on the PS2.. but it was a dreamcast game, and everyone knows the Dreamy wasnt as powerful as the ps2 but what programmers know now about the PS2, i reckon they could pull it off in an amazing way!

The trick is to want to understand the machine in order to make the games, I feel this is true of the PS3.
And will do fantastically well in time, because most programmers know the PS3 is awesome, but seems that they are afraid to go near it, and would rather port a game because its easy. When Sony starts to help developers to see how they can put the PS3's hardware to good use, that’s when we will see some incredible games come out.

I try to talk to xbox fanboys in the shops and try to have a conversation with them, but they get all defensive and start saying things.. stupid things like there isn’t any decent games on it or no one will buy it because its rubbish
So I say a few things back and they think im having a dig at Xbox. its not slagging off Xbox, because i feel that Xbox is a great machine, i didnt always think this, but have changed my mind.

the fanboys refuse to believe that their machine as powerful as it is, isn’t the best out there. The PS3 not only is more powerful (this time around), but it’s also a 'deeper' console, depths that only truly great programmers will see. And i can imagine that pisses a lot of people off. But im sure that there are games that the PS3 probably wouldn’t handle as well as it being on the 360.

if a fanboy could talk about things in an intelligent fashion about why they think the xbox/360 will in some way be better/out perform or sell more, they wouldn’t be fanboys.

But whatever side a true fanboy is on, its still not cool to be one. I am a (sorta) self confessed Sony Fanboy, its true. But I also like to think im intelligent to know and to have a conversation about these things, and if im wrong I will listen and possibly change my opinion. After all.. if we didn’t, how would we progress as human beings?

a true fanboy will say stuff like "i love PS3" at any opportunity, regardless of topic.

glad we don’t have any here ...

dillon: I certainly agree the PS2 was much better than the Xbox. Here's how I look at it-

1. Reliability. Both were terrible at launch, yes, but the PS2 lasted me five years and I had to replace the Xbox three times in that same span of time. My friends were all the same way. One PS2, multiple Xboxes. Furthermore, I never even knew what a "DRE" was until I got an Xbox. After 6+ years with the PS2, I never saw that message ONCE. I saw it like 20% of the time I'd put a game into the Xbox.

2. More genres represented with quality titles. If you wanted a strategy game, the Xbox gave you nil while PS2 gave you Dynasty Tactics, Ring of Red, Front Mission 4, the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Kessen series, Disgaea, Phantom Brave, etc, etc, etc. The Xbox had crappy platformers while the PS2 had the two best series in the industry in Ratchet and Clank and Jak, not to mention the lesser-known yet still well-received titles like Sly Cooper, Kya: Dark Lineage, Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil, etc. If you wanted a Japanese RPG, you were SOL with the Xbox, and we all know how many of THOSE the PS2 had. Rhythm/dance? Nothing on the Xbox until DDR late in its lifespan while the PS2 offered all the DDRs, Guitar Hero, Gitaroo-Man, Mad Maestro, Frequency, Amplitude, etc. In the fighting category, the Xbox had Dead or Alive while the PS2 had Tekken and Virtua Fighter.

See what I mean? Just for more diversity on the PS2. It's true that FPSs were always better on the Xbox, and the console usually had the best version of multiplatform titles, but that's about where it ended for me.

3. The PS2 had more top-notch exclusives. I think I can count Halo/Halo 2, Crimson Skies, Ninja Gaiden, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jade Empire, Deathrow, Otogi/Otogi 2, and Fable. The PS2 had FF X and FF XII, GT 3 and 4, God of War I/II, the aforementioned R&C and Jak games, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, Okami, Kingdom Hearts 1/2, TM: Black, and several more titles from each of those genres that go mostly unrepresented on the Xbox.

I mean, Live was certainly superior to the Network and (as I said earlier), multiplatform games were almost always better on the Xbox, and there were several titles I'm damn glad I had a Xbox for. But all in all, I think it's very clear the PS2 was a much better system overall, IMO.

While I'm inclined to agree that the PS2 was the better of the two systems overall (or at least had better games anyway), it's been almost the exact opposite with everyone I know. I don't know a single PS2 owner who didn't have to replace their system at some point (including myself), and I can only think of one guy I know that had to get a new Xbox. I've seen DREs on varius PS2s all the time, I've never seen it with a Xbox.

And I've never had any problems with either console that would cause me to get a repair or even purchase a new one. I had DRE's on both, admittedly a few more on Xbox, but with my younger brother discs used to get scratched to hell so thats by the by.

I've always loved both machines, but if I had to choose between any of my consoles it'd have to be the PS2, just because the sheer volume of good games.

My anecdotal evidence states that only the 360 ever went bad, therefore, I will continue to consider this as truth. Therefore, xbox is just as reliable as the ps2, and you are wrong.

I don't rank all of my consoles. I was severely dissapointed by all three last time around, and yet in times, I liked them all as well. Overall, I got relatively the same enjoyment out of them all (aside that the ps2 lived longer, so I suppose it edges them out because of that). I expect the same to come out of this round.
