Here is my situation. I am asking for Xbox Live for Christmas, but need to know exactly what to get, so hopefully you guys can tell me what all i need. I know I need a router and stuff but don't know what is plugged into what. So can you guys tell me what I need?
By the way, there is no networking card in my computer. |

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
Now this all depends on what kind of internet access you have. If you had put a general location in your profile it may have given me an idea but anywa, here goes. Assuming you already have an internet connection and it's ADSL: You need a network cable to plug into the back of your XBOX and the router/modem then this plugs into the wall. You can go wireless but I find wired really easy and cuts down on the stuff you'd have to buy. If you are using cable internet then you will need to just buy a router into which you also plug your existing modem. It is VERY easy to get the XBOX online when compared to doing the same with your PC.

I have broadband internet, so it should be able to handle it. But as for what I need to get. I need a router, and I plug that into my modem I plug the ethernet cord from the modem into my xbox, and that is it? I don't need anything plugged in from my computer? Also, how do I plug the router into the modem? Does it have a cord on it or would I have to buy another ethernet cord?

I don't own a ps3

a router usually comes with an ethernet cable to plug your modem to it on the WAN port (it usually sits alone).
for the other devices, it depends...

You will most likely first need to connect the modem to the router and then the router to the PC (with supplied cable). This will be to configure the router. Then if you don't want to buy another cable you can just unplug the cable from your PC and plug it into the XBOX and with a quick setup you will be online in no time. If buy an extra cable you could have your PC connected at the same time but this isn't a requirement.
EDIT:: I bought a router with in built modem to make it easier.

Time for a visit from Dr MSPaint!
![]() All the ethernet in this setup should be Cat5e or Cat6, Patch, not crossover. If you're unsure, ask an employee. |
