Well, of the 60GB hard drive, RR7 only takes 857KB, Resistance takes 602MB, and CoD takes...umm...I think around 200MB. Resistance is huge; the majority of PS3 games don't take 602MB...notice how small RR7 is.

![]() In regards to the Sixaxis, I was just talking about the USB cable used to connect it to the PS3 for initial registration and charging. It's much shorter than a standard controller cable, but of course the point is to use the Sixaxis wirelessly...they just tell you that you CAN play with it WHILE it's charging, and it's pretty silly to use such a short cable...you'd be a foot in front of the TV. As for a cable extender, I don't think any such accessory exists just yet. The sound is fantastic with HD; much better than in standard-def TVs. It's really quite extraordinary. The music and effects seem almost muted on standard-def sets in comparison to HDTV. While I still think the 360 controller is slightly better for FPSs, I emphasize the word "slightly." There's been a lot of bad press about the Sixaxis, especially when it comes to FPSs, but it's mostly bogus hater crap. The analogs are a touch too sensitive and the whole thing is just too damn light, but the controller works FINE with Resistance, and I'm experiencing no problems. The only thing I don't like is that the default controls have "switch weapon" assigned to the R2 button...and because the R2/L2 buttons on the Sixaxis are like half-button, half-trigger, you really have to push it fast and hard to switch weapons. The more I play around with those new R2/L2 buttons, the more I dislike them. But other than that, the Sixaxis works perfectly for all the games I've played. The Intercooler is for, of course, cooling down the system. However, at this point, unless its SONY MADE, I'd advise against it. Nyko's Interooler for the 360 has supposedly been responsible for a few hardware issues, and I wouldn't trust any third-party stuff with the PS3 at this point. And in all honesty, I don't think you need it. I've had the machine on for 6-10 hours each of the first two days, sometimes for as long as 4 hours at a stretch, and it's fine. It gets warm, obviously, and the fan does kick on, but even when that happens, it's still crazy quiet. Overheating doesn't appear to be a problem. I'm going to test the SD card functionality tomorrow, so be on the lookout for that info. ![]()

cheers Ben, that answers a lot of questions!
i guess its a programming problem rather than a console problem with the draw distance. but its good to know that slow down can be solved on the PS3 for B/C games. certainly sounds like i will have to get a HD tv, i really didnt realise how much of a difference it would make! sounds huge tho! but at least if i have a ps3 for say 6 months or more with an old TV, when i get a HD telly, it will be worth bringing out the 'old' ps3 game out to play! lol. as regards to your coverage on the main page, i prefer this to IGN's. at least we know you guys and it just seems more personal when you go through whats in the box and first impressions on the games. got to say though, most launch games imo are never as good as they could be a year down the line, not for any console.. but if they can at least 'match' what is being produced on the 360 up to this point, that in my book is bloody amazing, and just shows that the PS3 has one hell of a healthy life in front of it.

![]() I must emphasize that HD isn't necessary for the PS3; it's just that HD makes everything look so amazing. Even though I'm playing on my crappy old 27-inch Sony TV with S-Video, that doesn't stop me from having a ton of fun with the games, and of course, they still look awesome. Just not anywhere near what they COULD look like, unfortunately. And no, the launch lineups are never very good, and that holds true for the PS3. Only Resistance is a "must-have" title for the PS3's launch; there are several great games, but most of them are multiplatform and only RR7 is the other exclusive top-notch title.......and that's not exactly "must-have," either. But as I'm going to point out in my final PS3 Report Card I'm going to issue, there's a big difference between the Xbox 360 and PS3 in terms of hardware...most specifically, the ease of development for game designers. In short, if the launch titles look like this on the PS3, I'm VERY encouraged for the future of the system. ![]()

Very thankful for all the effort you guys have put in Ben, it's got me extremely interested!
I'm not usually into launch stuff, I usually avoid it so I dont get too tempted to buy whatever console it is, but this time around I KNOW I can't get a PS3 so it's great to read about. Between this (awesome) coverage and me getting a 360 for xmas, I'm very excited for the next generation of gaming!

No Warhawk, unfortunately. That's been pushed into 2007, and we don't have a date.

Excellent coverage and info Ben!
Keep up the good work. And I look forewards to the info on Secure Digital card functionality. How long does it take to do a game save? How long does it take to transfer saves on an sd to a mem stick? Can we hookup a webcam? What about sound capture? Can we do video capture if a usb camera is plugged in? Can in game music be saved to a portable media device? Can game cgi scenes be saved to a portable media? Can a printer be hooked up? Can four PS3 units be hooked up with a hub instead of going splitscreen? Can we rip a game to the PS3 hard drive and play it from there instead of having to always bootup the disc? How fast does the hard drive based game load up versus the disc based? Well thats todays one or two questions................................. ![]() |

Not sure about the graphics or sound capture, but I'm pretty sure you can't record and save in-game CGI or sound. As for any other hook-up questions, there's a USB slot on the machine, so I suppose anything is possible...but like I said before, I unfortunately have no way of testing all of that. I'm not sure about that hard drive question...you CAN load the games on the HD, but I think you still need the disc to play. I'll find out tomorrow, because I'm relatively certain Resistance got loaded onto the HD... And once I figure that out, I can answer the last question. ![]()
